New to the hobby

Welcome!
When I started (a month ago) I got all excited and bought stuff and got going. But if I had taken my time and researched a bit more I would be way better off. Spent $100 more for the tank than I should've, used untrustworthy testing equipment and right now I'm having issues with the heater keeping a consistant temp so I'll have to replace the heater soon with something better than what I have. There really is something to the "buy it once" theory.

Happy Reefing!

Thank you everyone for your warm welcome. It's refreshing to see this level of kindness. Originally I was looking at the fish aspect of the hobby, but now I find myself looking at fish and inverts in a utility way. Would it be a waste of time to start growing a nitrification culture before I get tank, rock etc?

I’d personally use this time to really focus on your main goal with your tank you plan to do.
Things to ask your self

Types of fish you would like to have
Study those fish find out what works with them what fish can be kept together ect
Same thing with inverts

Study their habits and duties they are gonna do for you and the tank

Are you going to qt?

Look into things if problems arise yes you have R2R and the great people here but sometimes quick action needs to be taken what are you gonna do in an emergency

Other then that happy reefing and goodluck with your plans looking forward to your build!

I'm still trying to figure out what size tank I need. I assume by QT you mean quarantine. A smaller tank for this purpose seems ideal. I'd like to have everything within a 4' long 4.5-5' high and 3' deep including stand, sump and etc .

All depends on the types of fish you want

20long or 40breeder is best

Your looking at a 75gal to 100gal make sure your okay with the initial cost to start one of those up

Yes, I'm getting ready. I'm tempted to look on ebay and fb marketplace for aquariums and some equipment/supplies. The pumps, heaters and lighting will most likely be new unless I just find them used in immaculate condition.

This is a great idea a lot of amazing deals just be careful of old tanks make sure it’s not an old tank hate to set one up just for it to leak but you can get complete setups for 2k

Welcome to R2R! For deals on equipment check Facebook market place. I've bought most of my set up on there. Including a 150 gallon with stand and canopy for $150. The classifieds here are good too. I've gotten some great deals here too.

Try using the same heater with a controller like inkbird w/ wifi :)

Welcome to the Reef :)
U didn't ask for advice but if a friend came to me w/ the same statement I would flood w/ advice :)
first, put a lock on your wallet and give the key to someone who doesn't care about the hobby and only cares about you. This hobby can be very simple w/o having to spend as much as so many do.
Have fun with the research make it a big part of the hobby because it is. Try to find local clubs or FB groups near you. There are tons of people in this hobby who are very friendly and giving.
Good luck :-)
