Hello everyone, just wanted to say hi to everyone here. I started a 75 gallon a month ago and due to some really bad advice I wish i joined sooner as I could have saved some $ and headaches. I'm looking forward to hearing your experiences and much needed knowledge as I believe i have started the set up the wrong way using a canister filter. Again thank you for any support you can give.

Welcome. Great site to help you get setup.

welcome. don't get too discouraged about the canister filter. while theyre not a favorite among reefers, you can use it. gut it out, and clean it weekly, if you go high bioload, clean it twice weekly and youll be fine.

Welcome to R2R :) This is a very friendly and helpful site to get you back on track!

Thank you for all of your prompt responses. To give a quick run down I'm running a 75g with a overflow into a 29g sump. There I pull out with a fluval FX6 ( 300g carbon, 1000g biomax, 500g nitrogen sponge) back to the tank. Main tank -have 80 lb of live sand with 80lb of base dry rock, 2x hydor 1500 powerheads/w wave maker, 36" Marineland led light. Sump has fluval 300w heater, 150 octopus skimmer, and a 24w green machine UV sterlizer. Livestock 2x damsels, tang, angel, 2x bumble bee snails, cowrie tiger snail, chocolate chip starfish, feather duster, sally lightfoot crab, 5x soft coral and a mushroom. I have a Rodi system and always add bacteria during weekly 15% water changes and or adding fish. Any support would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the family!
it sounds like your just using your canister filter as a media reactor. a pricey one, but that's about what it amounts to. You can just take the filter off line completely if you want to unless thats the only thing bringing the water back up to the display. In that case you would just need a return pump instead. It's an easy fix, but like dtacket said... you can keep using it just keep it clean.

Since you have the sump & protein skimmer already you can just eliminate the canister. Add a filter sock to the mix if you don't already have one & if there's extra room in the sump you can fill it with Marine pure spheres.
Put them in racks for easy cleaning. To make the racks all you'll need is some egg crate, zip ties, and a measuring tape. Measure your sumps width & depth, cut two pieces too size for each rack you plan on.
Next you will be cutting pieces for the bottom and sides for each. The length for the sides & bottom will of course be determined by what you've already cut. The width should be just enough to hold the spheres snugly between them.
Lay down & zip tie one piece to each side and the bottom. Be sure to keep the sides & bottom inside the racks structure so as not to increase the measured size.
I found using a zip tie every few inches best for building strong secure rack. Marine pure has tons of surface area for growing needed bacteria. Another plus, it doesn't clog easily. When I'm doing my maintenance these racks make things super easy. I just slide them out shake em around in the waste bucket to remove any detritus or loose particles, then slip them back in till next time.

That is great info....so if I remove the canister, I don't need the carbon, biomax or nitrogen sponge?

Ok I gutted the canister this morning but I'm nervous on how the tank will react with out the biomax and nitrate sponge ....hoping my numbers don't sky rocket...will I be okay with just the live sand and rock or should I put some of that in the dump until I get Marine pure spheres?

Welcome!
