Hi folks,

I just registered with this site. And I am brand new to Saltwater Aquariums. I have had fresh water aquariums in the past, but even that was years and years ago. So, I am what you might call the ultimate newbie. I am very interested in setting up a reef aquarium though. So, I have an opening question for you folks. There is a possibility that I could be moving in about 3 1/2 years. I live in Minnesota and would like to move out west to be near family and to get out of the Minnesota winters. So, would it be worth setting up a reef aquarium? If not, then would it even be worth setting up a FO saltwater aquarium? I really would like an aquarium. So, what do you folks think?

Thanks.
Herb

hello there, so no mater the size of tank youll need to keep it maintained and stable, a small setup needs up keep just like a 500gal needs up keep. depending on your preference and interests there is a huge variety out there to build off of. as for Minnesota winters, a livable house and a tank heater will most likely keep you going just fine. good luck keep us posted

My biggedt decision is if I think I might move in three years, should I put the money out for an aquarium. Whether it's Reef or FO.

Welcome to Reef2Reef . Your question, if I understand, is that you want to know if it is good decision to start a SWT knowing you may be moving in 3yrs? If you choose to set up a tank for the enjoyment for the next 3 years you may have to make a choice to either sell or move the set up. Good luck

in my opinion a nano sized tank would sustain well for those 3 years and can be broken down and moved easily enough compared to a large aquarium and sump. its up to you on the extent of the equipment and live stock you purchase.

I agree, if it were me I'd go with a 40g or less size tank. Its not a cheap hobby and the resale price is much less than the original investment and moving a large set up is an undertaking even for someone who is experienced at doing it.

Moving a tank and equipment is easy.. Moving the fish and critters is tough. In your shoes I would definitely start a tank and use this time to learn and go slow. Small hardy fish and easy corals.

Life happens and guessing whether your going to really move on 3 years is a crap shoot. Don't loose 3 years... When the time comes and you ate able to move, find new homes for your critters, sell.. Trade for equipment.. Trade for help loading a moving van. Clean out the tank, clean the equipment and move. Set it all back up when you get to you new home and use what you've learned in three years to build it better.

My 2 cents for what it's worth..

Thanks for the thoughts folks. I am going to set the tank up. But, I plan on going with hardy fish and easy corals. That way I can learn and get the hang of things. Then we will see what happens in three years. Thanks again.
