Hello,
I am starting a salt tank here in the near future (we I can find my light and save up for rock). I am in love with the look of Zoas! I was wondering if you could give me some tips so I am ready to go when i get started!

My tank will be a 36 tall, i will have live rock and sand. It will be a "low tech" in the sense that it will have a HOB and Macro allege for my "filters" and a friend of mine gave me a light that i am going to use. The light has 2 CFL double bulbs (if that makes sense, it is the bulb with the 4 prongs in a square pattern). I was told with that light I should be able to grow alot of different corals, but for now im in love with Zoas! They have such bright colors and that is what i am looking for!

On a side note, I am still trying to figure out my fish, so if there are ones to stay away from for Zoas please let me know, so far its looking like Goby\jawfish\firefish, Clowns?, and maybe something easy. The wife keeps changing her mind lol.

Thanks for reading!

Sounds like your talking about square pin power compact bulbs . What colors are stamped on them and the wattage .

Well i know one bulb is blow and the other im not sure... I know i have to get 2 new bulbs. But first i have to find the light, its somewhere in what used to be my garage... but the in-laws moved in and took it over. So once i find it i will be ordering new bulbs for it. (didnt want to order them with out the light just in case i have to buy a new light.)

That Tank is Crazy Tall.

It will be so hard to get light to penetrate that much water.

Even with the Most Expensive Lights Out There.

After 12" the PAR Really Really Drops Off.

I would use a Tank that is Not so Deep.

Or you will have to Spend a Fortune on Lights.

Nevermind I just read your next post that says 36 Gallon not 36" Tall.

well it is tall... its almost as tall as my 56tall... but as long as i put the zoas higher on rocks they will be closer to the lights.

i forgot to measure last night but if i remember correctly i think it was about 23 in tall... i dont remember the rest i will c if i can find the tank online...

I would think you would be fine with power compacts for some zoas and softies . They make bulbs with actinic and daylight in the same bulb for combinations .

I have the ebay dsuny lights . Yes alot of people might knock em but one thing about it I can afford those and they are programmable and my corals are happy and growing . Leds are good imo because you can control them . I have had halides , vho , t5 , power compacts and now leds .

well my biggest problem is im trying to start this with like no money... using what i have, a 1yr old kinda takes priority

Oh trust me I know how money goes lol . Do you know if the ballast is good in the light . I always do alot of research on prices for things to find a deal . Same bulbs lower price /shipping .

i actually got the light from a friend for free and had it on my 56 gallon when it was set up as a FW Planted, and the ballast went out... I spent like $50 and replaced both of them, then the bulbs went out cause they were a few years old.

Ok . Well weight out the cost of new bulbs and replacement verus the investment of an led fixture . Research research and research .
