Hello All.

I just gut my first ever Torch Coral. Picked her up at the LFS and drove 30 mins back to my house.

It was. Open in store and also in the bag and partially open in the bucket during acclimation (Coral RX dip)

originally put it 2/3 rd way up on left side but it retracted all the way with only some mucus/slime like film strands coming from it

just moved it to substrate in bottom left front corner. Not sure if this will help but thought maybe (i have only been into reef tank for about two months).

-is this level of polyp retraction normal?
-should I just leave her on bottom to adjust before moving back up slowly?
-how li g does it usually take to open up?

Frickin thing cost me 80 bucks (probably overspent in this spontaneous purchase).

most expensive thing in my tank lol. Hoping it wasn’t a quick waste o cash and that I just need to be patient.

Just leave it alone, they need time to acclimate to your tank. Its normal to be closed the first day sometimes

With that said, you did pick one of the more finicky corals as your first coral, so keep on top of your testing and maintain water quality.

How did you acclimate it?
On introduction, you want to place it in path of low light and low flow as not to shock it.
At this point, let it settle in an absorb water- you should slowly see it fill and color up.

How long has it been? Euphyllia corals HATE dips. It's fine to dip them, just know it's going to be mad for awhile. Like others have said, just let it be for awhile.

Thanks.

it’s not my first coral. Just my first torch coral (and first euphyllia coral)

thanks though. I’ll leave it on the bottom where it is now.

Deep breathes my friend…it’s go8ng thru shock and stress, it may take a while to get use to your tank lights and parameters…

I put it in 2 gal bucket with store water. Drip acclimate for 40 mins. Added Coral RX to bucket for 15 mins before putting in tank.

Ahhh.

didn’t know they hated dips. LFS guy said to dip her as a good matter of course.

it’s been in tank for about 3.5-4 hours. Still not open

didn't think ppl drip acclimated corals think its more stressful than just adding to the tank which is what i did with mine and it opened in 1 hour

Agree with all the above. Leave it as is. Don't move it for a couple weeks. Let it adjust.
Couple of weeks.

are you saying it should take weeks to open? Or just that I should leave on substrate for a couple weeks before repositioning it to top 2/3 (hopeful final placement)

I keep reading “patience is key”. Just need to actually practice what I read I guess.

maybe this hobby will help with my patience. Lol.

Maybe people don’t drip. I am still new to this so I just followed instruction the LFS guy gave for acclimating fish. Lol.

is this not necessary? Should I just be dipping then adding right to tank.

I just float the bag for a few minutes to equalize the temp, then I put the coral in the tank. No drip acclimation needed.

Just leave it where you placed it. Wait a couple weeks before you move it again, to another area in the tank.

Always dip new corals.
I also highly recommend getting a good magnifier to look for pests and eggs (usually at the base), as well as using a Turkey buster to blow off any pest that may stick to the tissue.

I join others recommendation to leave it alone for a couple of weeks to acclimate to its new environment.
And no need for drip acclimation for corals, floating for temp acclimation is enough.
