So, I’m at the five month point in my new system. When the diatoms started two months ago, they were fairly easy to clean off the glass with my Max Flipper Float. I am now getting little hard specks on the glass that the flipper can’t wipe off. They are light colored. They come off fairly easily with a scrapper.

Wondering if this is my first sign of coraline algae starting to grow. The system was started with dry rock and bare bottom. First possible introduction of coraline would have been two weeks ago when I added snails to the System.

Is there something else other than coraline which would be little hard dots on the glass. Seems to early and too many to be snail eggs.

Any pics under white lighting to see what you are referring to ?

You'll see coraline growing on powerheads and return nozzles before seeing on the rocks. usually its a light purple/pink color. It takes longer to grow on glass

Well, haha, guess I’ll have to wait a few days to get you a picture. I was pretty thorough cleaning it all off this morning. Pretty sure it’s not eggs. Just little light colored crustations. The power heads only have a reddish dust on parts of them that brushes off easily. Suspect that’s just diatom. I did seed the tank with copepods when I added the snails. Could they have something to do with it?

I’ll try to get a good pic when they come back.

Honestly don't worry to much about it. It will come in time. Just keep testing and keep your major elements stable. You'll see consumption of the elements before seeing the actual growth.
