I’ve only tried my hand with SPS for almost 2yrs. Faaaar from experienced, and only some basic stuff.

Anyways, lately I’ve noticed some new growth on a few of my “colonies” and it seems slightly odd haha. I’ve really buckled down on parameter testing and major stability for about the past 6mths, and have had good growth for awhile now. But recently some growth has me scratching my head. It seems the “tips/ends” have really grown fast compared to the corallites/polyps forming, does that make sense.

I’ve attached a few pics. Some with arrows pointing to said areas, and a few zoomed in further just to show they’re happy haha. I think, I have good growth, good extension, etc.

Just curious that’s all... Thanks!

*(in pics 1 and 4, the new growth is dang near smooth!)*

High alkalinity and low nutrients can cause stuff like this. Skeleton growth out paces the tissue. If you are running a clean tank keeping alk 7-8 balances out the growth rate. Nice stags btw

To be completely honest it’s been about 4days since my last testing. I’ll do some current testing and post everything up.

Thanks, I’m sure it’s common, but I have one about an inch from the surface that I’m pretty excited about! Haha

Current parameters...

Refractometer-
1.027

Apex-
Temp - 76.8
PH - 8.11

Saliferts-
Alk - 7
Cal - 425
Mag - 1325
No3 - 10

Hanna-
Po4 - .07

Salt slightly high, alk slightly low and I would verify the PH when relying on a probe. Youre not far off on the parameters though. Lighting could be the issue.
Moderate light and water flow
Temp 77-79
ph 8.1-8.3
salinity 1.025
nitrate < .4
phos < .04
Ammonia < .03
mG 1300
Alk 8-9
CA 440

I just had an ah-ha moment. About 2-3mths ago I changed my lighting specs. I went from the ORIGINAL BRS AB+ for hydra26hds to their “new” spectrum.

I know my parameters may be slightly moving and not perfect, but maybe that spectrum change could be it?

I know on the original settings, I had verified my par numbers via meter, but I haven’t on the new settings.

Tank is 60x36x24, I use 4-hydra26hds, and 2-blue+, and 2-super actinic.

hmmmmm....

@vetteguy53081 , or anyone...

So, after pondering this for a few days, and realizing my light setting change, does this mean they’re technically stretching for the light?

I understand parameters are slightly off, but they have been steady for awhile, and this seems to be a “new” issue as of lately, hence the “latest” growth.

More than likely -yes.
The way to find out is to add 10% blue and 5% white and observe the change if any after 24 hours
