Hi new to this and have been experimenting with my new camera, I got a Nikon d5200 and it came with a 85mm lens. The problem is I can't seem to get close enough with the coral from the front of the tank. I am on "A" setting around f9-13 and I've tried changing ISO from 1-1500 without any better results. At this point I basically have the lens on the glass almost, but still can't get those real close up shots that get posted. Again, bran new. Any tips welcome. I've read through most of the photography posts, they have gotten me thus far.

You need a longer focal length lens. I.e. 100mm or more.
Apature and iso won't get you closer. You can crop it in post it I belive in camera as well.

Dang it that is what I was afraid of. Is 85 to 100 that big difference ? What's a good inbetween ? My tanks 3 wide so some stuffs back a bit

Yea sorry. No if your going for super macro close ups you need to get the coral closer to you. If it came with a zoom you can try that.
Zooms generally don't have as much of a close focal distance like a macro lens or some prime lenses like yours.

I'll stop by the camera shop and try to get a zoom . Thanks for replying. Also if I'm setting white balance I'm putting something white in aquarium right ?

Tell the camera guy what distance your looking for and the type of picture. Take a penny with you to practice while your there.
And no set your white balance to the highest it will go. About 6000 or 10000. While your at the shop ask for an 85 filter. Should be ten bucks. Screws onto the lens.

Sorry no it's a glass color filter that will reduce the blue in the picture and make white balance easier.

I wish a zoom cost ten bucks.

Perfect so 85 filter and a zoom ? That's first stop tomorrow !

Your not in San Diego by chance are you?
Adams Ave. camera exposure. But go with care. Pm me I'll meet you there. He's a trip. Aswome Aswome trip.
