I just got a few new zoas and was wondering for the people who have these what seems to be the best placement of lighting for them. I bought a few Sunny D's, and Rastas and would love to know how how much light other people are giving them. I know that alot of people ive seen says low to moderate light but i have some zoas like my Gb's and Gold Mauls could literally be ok growing on the bulbs lol. Just some input would be nice to see everyones opinion.

sunny d's low light in my tank
and rastas- super high light - about 5" from diy led's got 2 polyps in march and have about 45 in the colony now

I have both of these zoas placed mid to high level in my tank with good flow under T5's. Though, I also have another rasta frag that is placed low that is doing well too.

ok lets add some more to this. All of the rastas we have didnt come from the same rock in the ocean.

where did you get your frag from

My rastas are from sexy corals
and my sunny d's are untraceable from a frag swap

just wondering if anyone else who would say have a rasta frag from sexy corals also have them better in high light?

perhaps what would help this discussion would be to list your lighting and tank depth as well. that might clear things up a bit as to why theyre higher or lower in a tank. im following closely because i am also about to get both morphs and would really like to know since theyre pretty pricey

My rastas are from Gonzo and Sunny D's are from CC. ive got the zoa placed low right now but im getting ready to start placing them higher. Im running T5's on this tank also.

Oh yea thanks guys for all your input im gonna try my rastas kinda low and they d's higher and see how they will turn out. the rastas colors as of now are very bright, and the sunny d's seem to be sorta faded so hopefully they will get better color as time goes

I have my sunny D's from Procrals on my frag rack about half way up in my 75 gal tank.. I run dual 250 watt halids with 4 54 watt ati blue + t5s.. The sunny d's are growing great and are very colorful.. they are in high flow and the skirts are full of glitter like specks too.. My rastas are right next to my sunnys and they seem to love it there too. I had another frag of rastas on the same rack, but they were not so happy because my tangs were picking at the frag plugs and got a few polyps of the rastas, so I put the frag on my sand bed in low light and they seem to be happy down there too.. I think heathy zoas are more about the right flow then the right light placment.

I have rastas from sexy and my sunny d's in low light. They are both just an inch off of the sand bed. The sunny d's are doing well and growing large and quickly while the rastas are taking their time :)

Both are ~22' below water surface with an 8 bulb Tek T5 light above.

Since every thread needs pics here are mine :)

Have any of you used a PAR meter and care to share in general where your numbers lie and where the zoas are kept?

I used one a while back. In the spot I have them I was getting about 140 PAR. when I first got the sunny d's I put them in about 90 par which is a little shaded spot I put everything to acclimate to the tank.
