I had the company I usually buy corals from put together a Zoa rock for me. He put together about 10 frags all mounted on a flat rock and around 3 polyps per frag.
I placed it into my 340 gallon display that has hammers, toadstools, acros, everything growing very well, Even some tiny green goni polyps are growing and reproducing.
However, half the zoas melted within 24 hours. The other half are still alive open during lights on, but, one frag has 3 polyps melting into a zoa soup mound. POlyps closed, looking almost liquidy and gray.
I soaked the rock in 1 gallon of tank water and concentrated coral rx and iodine. A bunch of pods came off, and one tiny serpent starfish. I soaked it for about ten minutes. I couldn't find any nudis or any pests.
I put the rock back in a lower spot in my tank that's more shaded. The only thing I can think of is the lights are too intense for them. I have 3 AI Hydra 52s and 4 T5 80 watt bulbs. And the flat rock was halfway up my tank at the top of my rock work. It was the best open spot I had. So, I lowered it 5-6 inches today to try to save what's left.
Any other suggestions. I tested my water just to see what else could be causing it.
Parameters as follows:
Salinity at 1.025 with calibrated ATC refrac (calibrated with salt water calibration fluid)
Alk: 8.7
Phosphates: .08 ppm (Hanna Checker)
Nitrates: 23 (Hanna High range checker)
Temp: 77.5 - 79
PH: 8.06 - 8.24
I run a skimmer, an algae turf scrubber, and I vodka dose. I dose baked baking soda for alk, calcium chloride (BRS) for calcium, and Mangnesium chloride and magnesium Sulfate.
I also dose Red Sea Trace Elments A, B, C, D at a ratio of 1:10 or 30 ml a week.
I also dose phyto 30 ml a day for the past month.
My parameters are allowing my acros to grow significantly month to month. My toad stool grows significantly month over month. I don't know what would cause my zoas to think that it's not good enough?
