I don’t have a tank for quarantine and bought a yellow tang on Saturday, has been fine and getting along good with my other fish. Get up today and my coral beauty is acting weird and laying against a rock, and the yellow tang is swimming funny. I look at the cb and it has tiny white dots all over it and about 30 min later the tang is dead, bought a 10 gallon to put the cb in to treat it but how long do I need to let the tank cycle before I can put the fb in it? I used rock out of my nano as a source of bacteria and made fresh saltwater for it.

So sorry for your loss. I lost all mine to Velvet for not quarantine corals. Here’s some good info to read..

#reefsquad maybe you can help

Then the live rock should have already set you up to get the coral beauty in the quarantine. At the rate the other fish died it sounds like velvet which as you know the clock is ticking and very fast. Obviously you have concerns regarding the quarantine tanks cycle. Test for ammonia, nitrite but you should be good. You can also add some bacteria in a bottle if you want but I don’t think it’s necessary.

You should be able to move him immediately. Just monitor every day for ammonia and do water changes as needed to control it. Don't use Prime or other ammonia detoxifiers if treating with copper.

Your tank will need to be without any fish for 6 weeks if we assume it was velvet (which from the sound of it is highly likely). 76 days if we are considering Ich a possibility.

So I do the same copper treatment for velvet as I do ich

Is the cb already breathing heavily?

Ok I’m shooting from the hip here but if the velvet has hit the fishes gills the breathing will be labored. Yes you can treat velvet with copper usually for 21-30 days. You can make the copper treatment even more effective by running hyposalinity but water parameters must be monitored regularly especially ph. You can also start things off with a freshwater dip dosed with formalin done several times. I know all this sounds like a huge pain and frankly it is. We have to put on the scrubs like a doctor but without the pay.
