Hey y'all new guy here stopping in to say hey, currently deciding on what tank I am wanting to buy and set up. I started my planning with the jbj 45 cube and have since decided to go a little bigger and am now looking at the red sea reefer 250/350. I'll probably change my mind again by the time I actually purchase a tank! I've been reading all the articles I can on here for months and decided its time I joined.

Welcome aboard. Looking back over many years/tanks, I would probably start with a 120 DT (4' x 2' x2') and a 30B sump.

I started out wanting to go with the JBJ rimless cube but want something a little bigger. I have been back and forth from a Fluval M90 all the way up to a used 150 from my LFS but i'm thinking something in the 50-75 range is going to be what I get.

I started writing down each tank I want and building what I want onto it.

Tank Possibility 1:

Red Sea Reefer 250

• Maxspec Gyre 130 for flow
• Cobalt Aquatics Neo therm Heater
• Quantum NYOS 120
• Ecotech Vectra M1 Return Pump
• BRS GFO/Carbon Reactor
• Lighting..... was thinking Three AI Prime HD's , or a AI Hydra 52?

Tank Possibility 2:

Red Sea max E-260

• Leave the thing alone
• Cobalt Aquatics Neo therm Heater
  
• Maxspec Gyre 130 for Flow

Tank Possibility 3:

SC Aquariums 80 Gallon PNP

• Maxspec Gyre 130 for flow
• Cobalt Aquatics Neo therm Heater
• BRS GFO/Carbon Reactor
• AI Hydra 26

All tanks I would be including a ATO reservoir and eventually a Apex and doser setup. Goal is to have a setup thats as hands off as possible because I am frequently out of country and wife would be taking care of it along with LFS doing biweekly or monthly Maintenance.

Please let me know what I am missing and or your opinions on these tanks and others i may have overlooked. I know i need plumbing and all the little stuff as well..

Gyre's are nice pumps, they are coming out with a new controller for the pumps soon. more advanced then the ones now.

Have you though about having a tank made to your specs for a 75 cube? I am raising the funds for the wife's office tank. I want a specific size and glass for here tank. I am think of doing a 75 to 80 gal cube with sapphire glass. I am going to most likely DIY the hole thing, just to do it.

I saw the SC was less, I like the stand better with the SC too. I have the 2 gyre 130's and 2 hydra 26 hd on my 72.

And comes with pump, sump, skimmer and plumbing.. from everything I have read they are great tanks and the customer service is top notch.

Then the SC is you system. Rea Sea has the market right now, so they can get the price.

Welcome to R2R and the decision making options of your new hobby! I ended up starting with a 120g (mentioned above) and couldn't be happier. I personally think it's a great starter tank. Large enough to keep the violent swings at bay but not too large to be overwhelming. Just a little food for thought and to further confuse you! Good luck with your decision.

Welcome... i have been looking at the red sea reefer tanks as well... they come complete so you wont have to worry about jerry rigging anything which is nice... but if you want custom just go buy a non-brand local made tank and build your own setup.
ive learned bigger is better

Yea I can only fit about a 3' tank so a nice 100+ isn't viable unless I splurge on something custom.

The SC 80 is probably what I'm going to go with I just have to figure out my ATO first. I don't think there's much room underneath.

Welcome! Congrats on joining to most fun and addicting forum of the universe, please be patient and refrain from exiting this roller coaster of a hobby. Remember to keep your legs and arms inside the ride at all times! Especially your ground probes and heaters! Lol If you get stuck or in line to get on the ride please be patient! Now in all seriousness, patience is a huge thing in this hobby. Can't wait to see some pics!
