I'm planning my 30 gallon sump build and wanted to know do i need a filter sock set up if i'm doing refugium in the sump? most video's or pic's i've seen don't have filter socks when refugium is present.

Check out the BRS video on the topic for some great info. No one answer on this topic but I will say I do not run them as they are not necessary. However there are certainly some benefits so you may choose you like to use them.

Filter socks are a personal preference. I have always used them, but I just run a sump and hate cleaning it. I may run without the sock in a refuge to avoid trapping pods or other critters before they can make it back into the fuge. Put some pix up if you like so we can enjoy your progress

I use one as added measure and you should see how filthy they get. I think it helps in my system anyway

Also, in context of the fuge, detritus will collect in the fuge without socks and feed things like copepods. It will not consume all though and you will likely need to vacuum your sump from time to time without socks. However, socks are a pain and need cleaned very frequently so definitely worth it. I vacuum my sump about twice a year with no socks.

I have a 40 breeder sump with fuge and i have very little detritus. I only use a sock when i do maintenance such as clean the glass and sand bed.

I would highly recommend at least having the option. I use them sometimes, I leave them off other times. I didnt plan for them when building my sump and while I dont normally use them, they are a great, quick "catcher" when cleaning the tank or if I accidentally overfeed.

Having to rig up a way to use them after the tank was up, was a complete pain. My only goal is to save you from that " wish I had them" moment.

Good luck! And welcome to R2R!!!!

Oh! And it doesnt have to be the "platform type filter sock holder with it's own overflow" or anything that fancy, just some method of getting them under and around your pipes. For example, my rigged method is a hook... that's it. When I need a sock, I have to pull the sock up from under and around the pipes leading into the sump and I hook the drawstring on the hook so it doesnt go anywhere. I wish I had a more elaborate method but..... I didnt plan for them :)
