Newbeeeeeee alert

I didn't even think to try Grainger! It's actually not too far from my house, I'll definitely check there.

Timpanogos is an awesome hike :D I can't wait for it to be warm enough so I can get up there!

Ok R2R led sperts... im new to the reef tank experience and i need some help. My tank came with the elive led light.. nice light but not enough for corals so im going on four months now and have some zoa, trumpet, and an acon along with a couple of clowns. My tank is 36x12x24 and im looking to do alot of different corals in the future. Money is an issue so im looking at the Chinese black boxes from ebay and Amazon. My question is the difference of a 120w to a 300w unit. One is like 19" and the other is like 34". What one would be good for a tank my size?
Can't really go wrong with Ocean Revive T247s. While they are made in China, the guy who designed and owns the patent on them is here in Portland, Or., one of the oldest members of our local reef club PNWMAS, and super easy to get ahold of. I ran them for a few years until I decided I wanted the controllability of a Radion and switched. I will say I think I grew better corals under the T247s though. A lot of our lfs' actually run them on their display tanks.

If you need proof, look up @Reefnjunkie. His tank is off the hook and he has run T247s for years now.

Okay all. I got my light meter. It reads 28k if point up at the light itself right above the water - but if pointing at the water it only reads 700. Is that normal?

yes. Try the same experiment with a light bulb, or walk around the house. (less light & more light)
On the tank, move the sensor around over the entire surface best you can, get the average(28k ish?).

28,000 lux / constant 55 (call it 55 as a med) = 509 par
28,000 lux / constant 46(of a GREAT LIGHT) = 608
28,000 lux / constant 67 (of junk) = 417

I only get 28ish if the sensor is pointing up at the light, not reflecting off the water

I am actually getting average 34k high of 38. Is that too much for LPS, zoas, softies?

Sorry. I am a it slow. Explain the constant?

if they are happy. No. (its so species specific) you have to research the animal.
I dont know the depth of the tank or where they are placed.

The constant is a " spectral quality" value placed on the light source. IE an Aquasun T5 has a constant of 50, a coolwhite has a constant of 74.

As there are so many and so few have been tested, AND have many different color settings, led fixtures have an unknown constant. I average.
A radion Id guess closer to 50(maybe less) , A Chinese mars aqua, as Ive seen tested by lux and par runs in the low 60's to 67.
An SB Im hoping runs close to the radions and Ive seen both par and lux testing. So I average that at 55.

Gotcha. Thank you.

Kessil 56% intensity 30% color at surface using a lux meter app

is this good or bad? lol

Yes, phone needs a charge and just switched to cricket hah. I was getting 595 around the edges. Seems as though I have poor lux!

Those apps are not good. I downloaded a few and am getting nowhere near the readings my light meter is getting. The galacta app shows 1.4k whiles light meter reads 34k. Slight difference.

Ok, thanks...I won't use the phone app then
