Hello all,
I am fairly new to this and I have a question about clean up crews. I was wondering what are good numbers of snails and hermits. I've red some snails such as nerites you can keep as many as 1 snail per gallon. I've got 6 hermits and 3 asterea, 3 nerites, and 1 margarita snail and I'm all ready worried about having too many for the amount of things there are to eat. I'm mostly worried about snails as the hermits seem to like the fish food just fine. I feed nori to my tank, but the snails never get any of it. Should I be worried about having too many snails or can I have more. I have a 58 gallon with no visible algae besides the film stuff on the glass after a week or so and a bit of bubble algae(3 bubbles) which i'll be removing asap. Thanks
Regards
Cham

I would put about 50 hermits in there, maybe more. For snails, I would suggest sticking to the larger zebra or Mexican turbos. I would add about 10 of these now, depending on how big they are. They will bulldoze loose frags but are the only snails in my experience that eat a significant amount of algae.

I wouldn't worry much. Your snails are most active at night and clean film algae from the rocks and glass as well as detritus. I don't think I've ever seen a snail starve. Be aware though, hermits will eat snails and even steal shells if the shells are large enough.

50 snails! that seems like a lot isn't it. It seems like my tank would be crawling...lol. As far as snail choice I have been very please with the asterea for algae eating...what little bit there is. and I like the way the nerites and margarita look. I heard turbos get big so I have steered clear from them not wanting anything to get too big. Thanks for the thoughts yall, I appreciate it.
Regards,
cham
