Hello, all. I am a complete n00b to the saltwater world. I've had a couple freshwater setups before (real small, like 5 & 10 gallon), and currently I only have a 2.5g freshwater with a Betta and Nerite snail.

I picked up a previously used 30g tank with the intentions of starting a FOWLR a few months ago, and built an Ikea Kallax four-shelf unit as a stand. The tank came with a Top Fin Power Filter 30 and lighting. Since the time I got the tank through today, I have been doing extensive research, and finally bit the bullet and ordered Instant Ocean salt mix, 35lbs Caribsea live salt, & 25lbs Dry Rock & 10lbs Live Aquacultured Rock from marcorocks.com. I also bought a saltwater test kit for pH, nitrate, nitrite etc, 2 heaters (one for tank and one when I do water changes), & a maxi jet 400 for water changes... As well as typical needed stuff (air pump, hydrometer, gravel vac, thermometer, TDS meter).

I am justing waiting for everything to come so I can setup the rocks, add my sand, and then add the saltwater and then begin the filtration. Considering the rock I purchased, how long do you guys think it will take to cycle through? Also, is the Filter that came with the tank ok to use in the beginning? Also, do I need to do/add anything else when I first run the tank? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Again, thanks for reading.

Welcome!

As to how long to expect for the cycle, only your test kits can tell you that. Don't rush, take it slow and you will have success.

Welcome to Reef2Reef. There will be plenty of time to answer questions. In the mean time I'd suggest you go to the member tanks forum and look at other 30 gallon tanks.

Keep us posted on your build.

Welcome! You're doing it the right way with lots of research first. So many people try and rush in and it comes back to get them later.

Thanks, all, for the warm welcomes! I will keep everyone up-to-date on my build. Just waiting for things to come in

Welcome to R2R

Stay away from the Ocean Floor, way over priced garbage. I go to Tropical Treasures, on 35th ave and Greenway.

Ok! Thanks for the heads up. I'll probably visit them either this or next weekend just to browse. Not planning on getting fish until the end of April/early May if all goes well.
