Newbie - Going Tropical to Marine

Hello!

I've had my tropical tank for a number of years now, and I'm growing a tad bored of guppies and neons..

I've always wanted my own little reef so I figure it's time to invest some time into building one!

Currently I have a 200-230 litre tank, with a Tetratec EX600 filter and a suitable heater. I'm aware I need to invest in a few extra bits and bobs but could really use some advice on brands and models that are best. I don't want to cut any corners !

I've just noticed my filter is suitable for marine, but they advise it is for up to 120l aquariums, do you think I should purchase something different?

Also will I be required to replace the water in my tank? How about substrate (gravel) and rocks? I have not used any medications in my tank but I have used Aquasafe.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Welcome to R2R! Your tropical tank has a nice aquascape, use that skill in your SW! Tunze and reef octopus skimmers are great, but pricy. Don't use a filter, it's counter productive. For a newbie like you I'd recommend LED lights because they are the most energy efficient and the most simple to use. Do some research and loom at some people's build threads to see what light is the best for you, it really does make a difference, not a LED fixtures are made the same, they can vary drastically. For water you should use RO DI water with salt mixed in, to get the best results.
