Okay. I've read a number of the posts about Durso overflows, and would appreciate thoughts on whether or not I have this figured out. My goal is to reduce the water sound coming through my tank. Please don't ask me to replumb my tank. This was my first purchase and I relied on the LFS to set it up for me. So I'm still learning.

First -- I understand that one way to manage water flow through the Durso is by changing the return pump flow. Is this a good strategy? I have a Vectra M2 return pump that's running at 80% (so I'm assuming it's 1600 gph since the stated max is 2000) in my 120G tank. So I can probably slow down the flow if that makes sense.

Second -- the outlets into my sump are above the water line. I can add 1" PVC pipe to the bulkheads to extend the pipes 1" below the sump water line.

Would appreciate any thoughts on whether or not either of these changes make sense, and which one would you try first?

Thanks in advance!

I have to manage water flow with both the overflow gate valves (water leaving the DT) and the return flow (water entering).

When I make adjustments to silence the DT, I leave the gate (or gates) fully open and then adjust my return pump to maximize my flow.

Then I slowly close the gate valve until she just goes silent.

Then flow in must equal the flow out or she will either overflow, run dry or make noise.

@Uncle99 thanks for your reply. I‘ve read elsewhere that you shouldn’t use a gate valve with a durso because there isn’t an emergency overflow. In my case I don’t have an emergency overflow.

Your absolutely correct.
Durso always scares me a bit.
Well hindsight is 20/20 and I’ve learned a bit over the past year!

I think I’ll first try extending the pipes in my sump so they exit below the water surface. See how that goes, and then consider changing my flow rate. Thx
