I am sure I could search for a bit and find my answer but I am hoping someone can give me some specific information. I am not new to the hobby but back in the early 90s forum like this didn't exist. I could probably get close to the solution but I would like some quick help and answers........... I am setting up a 70g for my son's room. I have a 20long for a sump. I have a Eheim sub 600 gph pump.......... I need some good dimensions for a coast to coast overflow and how to design the edge.... Slots or not? I also need to know where to drill the back for the three 1" bulkheads? Level.... Stagger..... Help.... Help.... Thanks alot.

I am putting one on my new build as well. This is the best information I know of beananimal.com/projects/silent-and-fail-safe-aquarium-overflow-system.aspx

I appreciate that link but I have read that already...... I am looking for placement of the bulkhead on the tank and a few other things that may help

So on the overflow "box" will it be internal or external?

Shot of an external with holes for 1 1/2" BH's

no real special placement. I used the total width of the Sanitary "T" and elbow for the spacing , and drilled accordingly

Now if its internal then the spacing will be different and can be a little closer cause the Sanitary "T" will be facing a different direction (my old 80gal cube with Foam Rock Wall on the back, sry just had to show off )

If the box is internal, then IMHO you will not need the teeth on the box

Not really like this as this is for an external box but almost the same idea. The water can just cascade over the edge without the teeth.

These are for "internal"

Okay.. I was thinking internal box and the bulkheads going through the back of the tank. It seems much simpler than the external box to me. So all the bulkheads can sit along the same plane and the height of the two main drains work fine like that? The 90 elbow sits just about flush with the bottom of the box on the inside?

Yes all bulkheads on the same plane. From what I have read and builds I have seen pictures of the siphon elbows should be 1/2" to 3/4" off the bottom on the overflow box.

Just wanted to update things. I have been hard at work on the tank since it is my son's Christmas present. I ended up with the bulkheads a little lower than I had planned on but I think it will work fine. I have a coast to coast overflow drying before installing tomorrow. It is 5 inches tall and 3.75 to the back wall and 36 wide. I am a little bit nervous that the water drop will be too far but I think there is plenty of head room for water level adjustment. I have a gate valve just above the sump sock for tuning. Here are a couple of pictures.....

Looks good!! Only thing I would say, and its not a huge deal, is next time space holes further apart. Just for safety of the glass. But you did a decent job. Make sure you post some pics of the internal box when its done!!

Here are some more pictures..... Forgot my password so switched.... Still me..... I am having issues with too little flow and troubles getting the full siphon to work. I have a Eheim 1250..... Need a 1262 I guess

The full siphon is probably being caught up where you have the gates valve and horizontal pipe. Usually don't want a horizontal run with that type of setup

I have tried using the other drain with the same results. I swapped the intake elbows and used the straight drop and one 45 and the ball valve at the back of the sump. That was actually more noise. I would guess that I am only in the 150gph range and just need to bump up into the 400+ range and should see better results. I have a smaller tank with similar horizontal run and greater flow and it works flawlessly. I think BeanAnimal's minimum was 300 on similar size tank and pipe.
