Welcome to Reef2Reef! Stay long, post often and let's see some pictures of your tanks!

I have been in the hobby over 6 years and I learn new things every day. Just keep on reading and expanding your knowledge.

Also whenever there is advice given by someone who has financial gain from your decision, take it with a grain of salt. Go to the LFS and get advice, but verify it on Reef2Reef before jumping in and buying what they recommended. I have seen too many people end up spending a small fortune to fix easy issues solely based on the advice of someone who has interest in your decision.

+1000!!!
LFS will often say anything to make a sale. Once you have figured out which are the good and which are the bad ones, trust becomes easier.

there are good lfs out there you just have to find the right ones. I would trust reef2reef over lfs:D
By the way.. Welcome!

Thanks so much guys....I have been warned about the dangers of people who want to make a sale.....and I am trying to get information from numerous sources before I try to make any informed decisions. Sometimes advice matches up and sometimes it doesn't. There is so much to learn in this hobby......and I can believe it that even after years of being in the hobby, you still learn new things. This is a very delicate process......and I have come to realize that everyone has their die hard ways of doing things......I guess in time, I will have mine also:)

You're wrong about people here and you're wrong about advice not matching up. I'm the only one with the correct answers and if you were smarter you'd understand that. I have more experience as well as a better grasp on all things reef. Your experience is irrelevant...and it just so happens that I make an exclusive line of reef products and unless you hate your animals you'll use what I sell. You're obviously a poser. you might get set in your ways but unless those ways are mine you'll never succeed...
(This is been a dramatization)
Have fun! It's a fascinating and rewarding hobby.

Hey guys,
I am very new to this hobby and i am starting my first tanks in Penang, Malaysia of all places in the world. good news is that fish and coral are very inexpensive. i bought a 44g tank yesterday that i am looking to use for quarantine, reduce stress from fish. Also, this will be my starter tank for the 300g that i am planning to order. If anyone can point me in the right direction i would appreciate it. i feel the aquarium stores here will sell me any filter or pump to get it out of the shop and that doesn't make me to confident. : ). I am looking to have the 44g bare bottom for now with a few live rocks in it while it cycles. what do you guys think?

LOL @ Liquid!!!

Welcome to R2R!!! Sit down and get comfy. I'm a relative newbie. Started out a year ago with my first marine tank (I've had freshwater tanks all my life but always believed the myth that salt water was too complicated for me, if I can do it YOU can do it!!!). My first SW tank is a 75g seahorse tank and has been very successful but I'm so limited on livestock for it. So I started my 2nd salt as a 55g reef... Been up 2 months and doing well ( it's much easier to cycle a tank with an established tank in the house. Seed good bacteria from your filter material and you're set). This weekend I will be setting up my 3rd... A 46 g bow front to put the seahorses in so I can claim my 75g back as a reef tank. Big plans I know!!! Anyway!!! This place is teeming with helpful people and information... It's just there for the asking! Feel free to ask any of us anything... There is only one stupid question here and that's the one that you didn't ask!!! ;)

Can you +infiniti?? Because if that's theoretically possible, I'd like to do that.

Initially, I would google and read reviews of local aquariums. However, I wasn't a member here first. If you can, I would look in the region threads of this forum and try to contact some ppl here that live near you and see who THEY recommend. Maybe you can meet up with that reefer AT the shop, even, so the shop owner knows you've got cred/you're legit. He won't feed you misinformation if he has a loyal customer he relies on next to you.. especially one that is now referring people.. he may even hook you up! I don't know if you would be able to find a fellow reefer, but if I were closer, I would go with you! lol just be safe, of course!

It's a real shame that shopkeep sold you fish right away. Those creatures go thru so much stress with shipping and different environments, especially if they were wild-caught. They really need a more established system, and the chromis may not have been that healthy to begin with. I kept meaning to PM you back but then kept getting sidetracked. I'll PM you tomorrow. In the meantime, you may want to keep your lights off to prevent the algae from spreading more and until you get a better quality spectrum over your tank to prevent that from happening again. Try frozen food, too. We don't use any pellets or flakes because they contain phosphates, which in turn, causes the algae to be more of a problem. I know, I know! So much to know! :-/ I'm so sorry! What kind of testing kit do you have?
