Newbie Mistake....SPS too close....

I did the same thing. Only way is to chop them and re glue some were else
I had plenty of corals face this same battle. Sometimes I let them merge (if their similar corals), other times I will use epoxy to kill off the base of one coral. Once they begin to grow vertically, then it's just a matter of of trimming bonsai style

They will work it out. Lots of time they zap each other and go the other way.
I would agree to leave it alone if they were a bit further apart but your pretty close. Pretty much the same as mine. My toxic green tort is towering my tri color and is starting to grow into it. If they have the room to get to a decent size then I would leave them but if they are going to be battling at a small size than I would move them.

Unless the corals your are dealing with are stingy, or super aggressive growers that is to state they will grow over zoo and anything else that get in their path,
leave them, usually they will stop once they sense each others presence leaving a hairs width or so,
or if from a similar family they just glow into one another and this offers a cool affect.
but be vigilant and watch, if one looks to be over powering the other pop any upward growth off at the base and move it

In my experience one of 3 things happen when mounting too close:
1. They wage full on war
2. They grow around each other
3. Their growth gets stunted/stifled by sensing the presence of each other
Personally 3 happened a lot in my tank. They would grow to each other then stop. I would give them more room then growth would take off until they were close again.

When you say they stopped growing, do you mean they stopped on the side each one is facing or it stopped completely?

Yeah it was wierd. It's almost like they sensed each others presence. Not sure if there is some kind of chemotactic mechanism at play. The parts of the colonies in proximity just stopped growing while other parts were growing fine.
