Good Evening all

I've been a freshwater fishkeeper for almost 20 years, currently running a 500ltr mixed community. I had an 18 month spell about 12 years ago with Marines but didn't have time to focus on it unfortunately.

I'm now in a position where I have a 48ltr tank that I would like to set up low tech with live rock, live sand and with a couple of fish and shrimps. I also want to run it with no skimmer. I plan on having an internal filter packed with carbon. When the fish are introduced I will add ATM Marine Colony.

Has anyone tried this with any success? Anything further I can do to help keep it as low tech as possible?

Very much possible. You need a cheap led bulb (like abi tuna blue) on timer, a preset heater, and hob filter (if you don’t have backchamber to keep some filter floss and chemipure blue) , a hydor power head and may be manual or a gravity fed ato . That’s all I think you need assuming some kind of return pump is there already

Without a skimmer and depending on the fish load (keep it light) you will need to keep an eye on nitrate levels and resultant unwanted algae growth. You will need to be diligent about weekly to biweekly water changes.
