Hey everyone! This will be my first SW build and have a few questions about pump sizes for my system. My plan is for a mixed reef.

75g with built-in over flow
20g long for sump
Aqua-C ev120 skimmer
Icecap 660 ballast

The Aqua-C recommends a Mag5 or RIO 2100, so that much I know, but should I use the same pump for my return?

The tank is bottom drilled for a closed loop system and from what I've been reading this sounds like to way to go instead of power heads. Since I am a newbie, and want to keep my marriage intact, what size external pump should I buy? There probably won't be any high end corals or anything for a while but still...I have no clue how to size it. There is one inlet and two returns on the cls. I thought about getting that JBJ Duo Wave Maker with the 1600 gph heads. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

I would go a little bigger on the return pump if I were you, I too have a 75 gallon and I have a rio 3100 which I love, bang for the buck Rio's are great. Or if you wanted to go the Mag route I would recommend going up to the 7. Both of these will give you a pretty good flow if you run your sump under your tank as I do. But if you are planning on an SPS tank you may want to think of getting an even larger return such as a MAG 9. Its definitely not going to hurt to go bigger but most of the time our pockets books say otherwise. But like I said I love my Rio because they are affordable and run great. Nothing against Mag's I just think they carry a little hefty of a price tag.

I have a mag 9 on my 75 and a mag 7 running my ev180. Great skimmer btw!!!

So, it wouldn't hurt to have a larger pump on the return? So I could run a RIo2100 on the skimmer and a 3100 for the return? Or a mag5 and a mag 7?

Yes but take the length of pipe(say 3') and check specs on pump. Believe mag 9 is 700 gph at 3'. That being 10x turnover of tank which is what u want.
