Hello fellow reef2reef-ers (if that's even a word). My name is Michael am new to this entire hobby but have had good friends involved in the hobby for many years. I have recently decided to start up with it and found this forum. I have nothing more than this introduction to post but I am thinking of starting up my own tank. I have little to no clue as to what I want in it or how to go about it but as soon as I decide on how to proceed I will post more here. I would appreciate any and all help because I'm sure it'll be a little over my head. Thanks to all and I'm glad I found this forum.

welcome!! This is a great hobby!! But I will recommend to research all u can before doing anything--I started out thinking all u had to do was dump some table salt to the tank so I started reseaching to find out how much table salt to add and was I ever shocked--LOL!!! I have had my 125 gal mixed reef tank now for 14 months and I am still learning new stuff all the time!! My advice on your very first step would be to pick one fish that you are most passionate about--the one that you would be happy to spend a lot of $$$ to make happy and go from there. For me it was clownfish--I base everything in my tank for them--tankmates and corals. When you find that special fish then start your research from there!! Good luck!!

I agree on the research first. I'd buy a good book on marine aquariums. Martin Moe has a handbook that's a classic and very helpful. If you're interested in a nano, Chris Brightwell has a great one. I'd read quite a bit before you purchase anything else. You'll learn about all the different setups and will be able to decide how you want to start. Stores don't always give the best advice so I'd read up and ask a lot of questions here. The most important concept to learn first is cycling the tank. That will be covered in any of these books. If you'd like a short description let me know. You'll save yourself so much frustration if you study first. Good luck!

Welcome! This is a great place to learn from others. I do everyday. Hope to see your new tank soon.
Have fun reefing!

Thanks everyone. I can already see I came to the right place. Glad to be here and I myself am looking forward to my first tank but I will admit some fear. But I can't wait. Thanks!
