Hello everyone,

I'm new to the hobby, I just started cycling my nano cube, going into my third week. It looks like my tank is showing diatoms. The fan pictured will be replaced with chiller by Chiller Solutions when they become available. Currently using an API test it to monitor the water.

In the process of waiting, I do have a hermit crab and i know it's not a good idea when cycling a tank. I would appreciate any advice, thank you in advance.

Welcome. I recently set up my first tank. Biocube 32. I'm still fairly new but this place is awesome and any time i've had questions, people on here have helped very quickly. One thing i learned early on is invest in decent testing kits. I started with API but i just didn't trust it as ammonia never quite showed 0 even though i know it was being consumed it just never showed 0. Good luck!

Thank you for the advice! Any suggestions on a good test kit?

I use the salifert kits. They aren't too expensive either. A lot of people like the Red Sea stuff. Hanna testers are great (from what ive heard). I will probably go with Hanna eventually but they are a bit pricey.

Wow you weren't kidding about Hanna being pricey! I'll probably go with the Red Sea kits for now. I'm planning on something easier, soft corals and a couple of beginner fish (clownfish, goby etc.).
Thanks again!

They are, just bought a pro reef kit. $255... plus a pocket phep+ tester $60. So just paid $315 just to test water parameters... But they are super easy, especially for my blind old self... lol

hi welcome to the reef going to love it here!!
lots of fun/info/fun/help/fun....

I'll look into it for sure! Since we're on the subject of testing, my salinity level has been consistent at 1.025-1.026 but i'm getting feedback that it's too high for a newer tank! I was planning on my first water change (5%) this week. Should I try and lower the salinity level?

Not in my opinion. Whatever you want to run it at, run it. Just keep it stable. That's the important thing...
