Newbie to the salt world

Hello, my name is mike, I am new to the saltwater world. I have a 100 gallon tank and I am hoping someone would kindly help me figuring out exactly everything I will need to get this up and going. I want to do this right no short cuts.

Here is what I am thinking at the moment.

I will be setting up the 100 gallon in my living room. I want to have a tank in the bottom of the stand for a coral frag grow tank.
I want all of my plumbing going into the basement.
Here is my problem. I am not sure in exactly what all I need for the system.
How big of tanks do I need for the ro/di ,the pre mix salt tank. What kind/how big of pumps. How many and kinds of filters.
Do I need a sump tank? If so what does that consist of.
What kind of metering do I need?


I have so many questions

I am hoping someone will be kind enough to help. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated

How big is your system going to be? base the tank size of a 20% volume of water for your system (volume is water minus rock, sand and off the stuff you will be sticking in the tank and sump)

What kind/how big of pumps.

Depends on the size of the system, flowbox, and head pressure

How many and kinds of filters.

There is all kinds of filtration that can be used in the sump. I would suggest to at the least have a protein skimmer

Do I need a sump tank? If so what does that consist of

It just depends on the space you have, but I would suggest on sump. I ran Hang on the back of the tank filtration for years. I found the sump gives a clean look to the tank and quite a few more options of what you can do now and for the future as you learn.

Rather than answer your questions in a long post, you would be better off reading a good book called “Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies” by Gregory Skomal. In addition to this book or other out there just as good, the many articles on Advancedaquarist and Saltwater smarts will offer you great advice for getting started and being successful. There is plethora of information too lengthy to post in a general thread regarding the many keys, concepts, scenarios, problems, solutions, equipment, stocking, husbandry and tools. Going the other route will best enable you to get off on the right foot as you dive into the fascinating and beautiful underwater world of marine life.

the ro/di - 15 gallon for auto top off would be fine
the pre mix salt tank - 35 gallon would be ok if you only need to do 20% water changes
What kind/how big of pumps - The best you can afford that will pump the amount of water to and from
How many and kinds of filters - A sump will be fine for a filter In that you will prob want a skimmer and at least a carbon reactor.
Do I need a sump tank? Yes
What kind of metering do I need - If you want to make this easy then something like an Apex to make controlling things a bit less labor intensive. Y9ou will have heaters, probes, dosing things, ect.. as well as the need to water test every week manually.

Be sure to look at the videos listed above and any others on how to set up a tank, sump, reactors as well as requirements for keeping the livestock you plan on having.
