NEWBIE - Used tank, any advice?

He said he will take 300 for everything.

I believe I will need to add a skimmer and some powerheads.

Is this a good start?

Sound like a great deal but depends on the aquarium condition. How old is the tank and if is leaking etc.

Dont buy unless he fills it first. Sand should be replaced. Rocks should be cured. What brand of lights are they? Do you plan on doing coral or fish only? You said its pre-drilled but I dont see an overflow for it. Still need heaters, heater controller, RODI, at least 2 powerheads (if doing coral need anywhere from 30 to 60x tank volume GPH including return pump)
That will get the tank started. Still need testing equipment, salt mix and a way to mix and store your water

All that being said it sounds like a great deal a new 120 gallon is around $450

If it holds water and comes with the rock, i think its a good deal, looks as if it has corner herbie overflows, but it could be shadows giving the effects of black overflow sections. make sure the bottom isnt cracked by the overflow, this commonly happens on older tanks with over tightening bulkheads. Id reseal the take before i used it tbh. But i like it.

You've come to the right place to get your questions answered. Judging by the rocks I doubt there was ever coral in the tank which means lights will have to be replaced also. Take your time and research a ton. No matter, if the tanks hold water it's still a good deal. Pay close attention to the silicone. Look for any bubbling or any other signs that make you look twice. For the price being offered I'd have to guess he may not be the first owner, or had the tank for quite some time. Always best to be very careful when putting a large box of water in your house.

Try to think where the tank is going to end up also. It will be well over 1000lbs when full. If you have a basement make sure it will be supported properly

Make sure the seams have no bubbles and the middle brace is not broken. Unless you want to spend a lot is time washing the sand, you should ditch it. If it comes with plumbing and pumps then it is a good deal.

Ok - I went to see this aquarium last night. I'm 50/50 on getting it. He said the tank was made by oceania. This guy buys tanks and then resells them. The tank needed to be cleaned. I really like the size and shape of the tank. It had two glass tops. A led light made by Beams Work. The tank had corner drains and returns (one on each side). The bulkhead had lots and lots of silicone and didn't look that neat of a job and all the plumbing was cut so the tank could be moved. The sump was home made from a 30/40 aquarium. I'm not sure about sump - it had a big middle compartment, but tiny side compartments - I would have to put the skimmer in the middle?

The stand was nice, but had been repainted black and that was alittle sloppy. It did come with a pump.

So I'm thinking I like the shape/size of tank. But wondering if I should keep looking for a more complete tank setup. Or get this one and build the equipment?

Any thoughts?

Beware of purchase from a quick fix seller.

You will need new bulkheads as there should not be silicone slapped on it. Could be for several reasons with the main reason being the gasket was placed outside the OF (nut side) instead of the inside of the OF on the bulkhead often being the reason. OR, it has cracked somewhere around the drilled hole or such.

Do not hesitate to ask if the tank has ever been treated with copper.

Quint beat Jaws and he's also right here. Cheaper is not the best route in reefing. I would suggest looking for a different setup amd maybe start with one that is used but not frankenstein'd together...ths tank is a sure fire way to hate reefing and think its a money pit...it is a money pit but buying quality items used is a fine way to go...this setup is not quality

You are convincing me to wait. I have no problem with that since there are plenty available in my area
