You could do both but you would need to add them at the same time, in a smaller tank there are less areas for them to call their territory so they may fight over it.

What would you recommend other than Firefish in a small tank. I like them but I don't just love them but I've had a hard time finding other options. I really like law mower blennies

Alright so here is what I've come up with.
2 Ocellaris clowns
1 green clown goby
1 tangora goby
1 Royal gramma
1 pistol shrimp

Update! I now have 30 lbs of live rock and added most of my clean up crew yesterday. I also added a yellow watchman goby.

Now that you got rock let's talk about aquascaping. The way your rocks are now will create a lot of dead spots and not lend well for coral placement. You're really going to want to try your best to keep the rocks off of the back glass. This is one of the same things I did with my first tank as well.

It's so hard with such a shallow tank but I thought I'd hear that sooner or later!

You should just grab a piece if paper and draw out the way you want your scape to look and do your best to emulate that. You don't want any rock touching glass.

I have one piece that is a shelf which I'm going to try to incorporate right in the center thought it'd be a good spot for corals one day.

Welcome to the salty side of things. Feel free to PM with questions as well.

I would keep the firefish on your list and swap the Royal Gramma out for a purple pseudochromis maybe? Or, what about getting a pair of purple firefish instead of a firefish and a royal gramma?

Thanks schooleyosis! I've been toying with other ideas everyday since I started. I currently have 2 domino damsels and a yellow watchman goby.

Those damsels will get nasty. I'd recommend getting them out before you put more rock in there as they will be tough to get out once you have more rock. It's not if, but when those will become territorial and try and take over the tank.

Remember, you can always get some Dr. Tims "one and only" to help with the cycle process.

That's what I was afraid of. I asked the people at my lfs and they said if I add my fish while the damsels are still young they'd be fine but I'm starting to read otherwise.

There is a "chance" they will be ok, and you can try it out. But I wouldn't hold my breath. LOL

They make fish traps for a reason :)

Alright I've been looking so this is what I'm gonna shoot for!

2 clowns (not sold on which ones get)
2 purple Firefish
1 yellow watchman goby
1 pistol shrimp
1 lawnmower blenny (maybe)

Seems legit to me! Half the fun of the hobby is researching and planning. I like my purple firefish a lot. Had a pair but one just disappeared one day, not sure what happened to it. Check out liveaquaria.com if you haven't already for more ideas. In the end, you have to look at the tank every day so you might as well get what you want.
