Good Morning

My Name is Alan I am from NJ (The Armpit of America) and I am new to reefing. I have done fresh water Cichlids, Rays Plants for 15 years and have decided to finally go Salt.
Guess I got tired of my kids picking out all the pretty salt fish in the pet store that we cannot have. Lol
My first experience with salt was about 7 years ago when I was setting up a 300 gallon in my foyer and a friend lost the seals in his 220 and asked me to take everything he had for $500.00. He had a custom made canopy with Metal Halides Atnics and Fluorescents, pumps, rocks, sand, corals, a couple fish and chemicals to this day I have no clue what they were for. I managed to set a 40 breeder to keep the live rock, fish, sand and corals he had going but eventually lost everything in a month. Scared me back to freshwater.
After reading 5 books and now having a good friend with a successful Salt set up I feel comfortable lauching my 135 dual Overflow tank. I just purchased SB Reef Elite Leds, Filter Guys Ocran Reef + 1 Ro/Di, Pro Clear Ultra 4 in 1 Sump, Coralife 36W Turbo Twist UV, Pair of Jebao 6000 DC pumps , Super Skimmer 220... I plan on building pvc manifolds and using return flow to power the Skimmer, UV etc as I have done on my Oceanic 175 BowFront I have running in my foyer. (Pictured above) which I hope to convert to a Salt set up in the future.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
As I feel the toughest part of the learning curve is media what to use for media and filtration is salt water set ups?

Thank you and Good luck to all of you!

Great introduction and youll love it here! Substrate, I like Caribsea Ocean Direct. Im doing only Marco dry rock in my Reefer 525XL, but used live rock in my 20g. Since im using only dry rock im seeding with ATM live colony. Other filtration there is many variation and methods. Skimmer, carbon reactor, biopellet reactor, UV reactor, ect.

Welcome to R2R, Alan! :) All the information you need to be a successful reefer is within these forums. Good luck with the build and we'll look forward to seeing progress pictures in the near future ;) Happy reefing!

welcome to R2R! It's great to have you here!

Thanks Stevoo1 for the suggestions I want to keep my dead white sand and was going to seed it using live Tufa and buy a seeding kit from GARF.com.
Hopefully fast track my start up a little bit really I am in no rush.
Probably my biggest issue with coral set ups is the My tank has to be a clean looking tank. I purchased a nice algae reactor but uncertain how to control coralline algae etc. I look forward to the corals popping off the white sand and Tufa rock.

Welcome to R2R, What's wrong with NJ;). There is no such thing as fast tracking in reefing without problems. Were did you find that tank? That is a great tank.

Glad you're here Alan!! Keep taking your time and figuring out media. Personally, I love Purigen, keeps ORP high and does a great job. Also love algae turf scrubbers (ATS), they are a perfect combo with a skimmer. Take a look @Floyd R Turbo and what he builds. IMO the best quality in the business.

Thank you I will check out Floyd.
Yes I have heard many recommendations about Purigen.

What's wrong with NJ well to start with our Govenor. Than add the Taxes, Insurance, House prices. It would be easier to talk about what's not wrong with NJ! lol
They sell a bottle for fast tracking everything! Now I do not necessarily agree with the philosophy but if the bottles keep selling, they have to be doing something right? I agree totally fast tracking without problems does not exist.

Thank you I spent a couple years looking for that Oceanic 175 dual Overflow. The stand is custom made but the side panels, glass doors, canopy to include the glass canopies for the tank as well as the black plastic one for the canopy are all Oceanic originals.
I sold this gem pictured above after I acquired my 175.
It is a 155 Oceanic with dual overflows original stand I sanded the stand to the wood and just lacquered it and made a custom canopy. If I knew I would go Salt j would have kept the 155 as the height difference makes the 175 tough to work with.
There is a stainless steel 175 Oceanic dual Overflow with canopy around here on CL. Mind you the guy is not letting it go cheap but you get what you pay for.
Next time I see it posted I will send you the link!

I have a 72 bow front and really link the bow front tanks. When I was coming out of reefing retirement, the first tank I look for was a Oceanic and was bummed that the were not making large glass tanks. When you start your build thread, pm me and send me a link and I will follow along.
