Hello all

I'm just considering the possibility of a SW aquarium. Last aquarium was FW, 25 years ago.

Kids are grown up and finishing up college, so there seems to be more spare $ available to consider starting a new hobby (imagine that, lol).

Considering starting with 40g breeder with custom sump with refugium, protein skimmer, and LED lighting. I am trying to sift through the vast amount of info available on the web and figure out my best path for success, so am looking forward to learning and sharing with this group.

Cheers from Oklahoma.

Welcome aboard. My best advice is to take it slow and enjoy each step. In the long run that will be the fastest route.

Thanks, fragmatic. Slow and steady is my goal.

I think I have found a LFS that seems equally as interested in me learning the chemistry and theory behind success as they are about just selling me something. I hope that, coupled with some experienced enthusiasts will give me that steady drip of info.

Welcome to Reef2reef. You should also look into a local reef club in your area and find opportunities to go look at other peoples reef tanks , if helps you get an idea of the possiblilities and itls fun meeting people in the hobby.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I am going thru the ”doubting my tank selection” phase. I initially planned a simple 40 breeder, but now thinking more about a custom size that will make the tank volume to be about 60 gal. (40x16x24). Weight is one concern, since I live Ina great old house built in 1929 and don't want to put to much weight on the floors. Another thing I consistently seem to hear is about larger is easier (not sure if 20 gal. Will make enough difference to matter). does anyone have words of wisdom/experience on this?

Bigger is better!
More expensive, but much easier and more rewarding.
That said, I also kept a 3g pico with a sump that i loved!

The reason why everybody keeps saying bigger is better is because you have more room for mistakes. Say you are making koolade in a 20 oz. bottle with a single serve pack. Now if you poor your single serve pack into a gallon jug it becomes more deluted which means you did not alter the water that much. I hope this makes scents.

once u get your water where it needs to be it will stay that way a lot longer in a bigger tank. Bigger tanks are more forgiving.
