I have a 125 gallon Marineland reef tank with dual corner overflows. My sump is an Eshopps R200 (I think), with an Eshopps skimmer in the first chamber, a refugium in the center chamber, and a Waveline DC 10000 in the last chamber. My question is about the refugium, and the black spong filter material before the pump. My LFS set everything up, and placed live sand, live rock, and chaeto in the refugium. I am seeing a lot of detritus buildup both in and on the sand in my refugium. Do I vacuum the refugium and clean the black sponge, or will this destroy my biological filtration? I have had saltwater tanks for years, but this is my first sump/refugium. Any input will be greatly appreciated.
