I have news papered my tank, turned of all the lights because I hear this will get rid of the red slime algae, I have tried water changes, many of them, chaeto in my fuge, siphoning it out. None have worked. I only have zoa's and some inverts in my tank right now. The Lights have been out for 2 1/2 days now. How long should i keep em off for until its gone? also Will this effect my zoas.
Thank You

I hate to say it but its going to come right back as soon as you uncover everything and cut lights back on. You need to find the root of the problem and fix that to keep it gone. Cutting back on feeding should help and maybe add more flow

Yeah, with more info we may be able to help you find the root of the problem. What size tank do you have? What are the inhabitants? What do you have for water movement?

that may not be a cure red slime problem. it might help reduce it but may not go way till you solve the problem. the red slime it feeding off of high nutrient level in the tank. which may still be there even after you bring the light back on. i would go that route but sense you have 3 day maybe 4.

sense i dont know the spec's of your tank its hard to say but i would siphoning as much as you can and increase you flow rate and cut back on feeding.

My tank is a 75GRR with aprox 140lbs of Live rock I only have a sally lightfoot crab, an emerald crab, peppermint shrimp and a pencil urchin. I have the ASM G2 Skimmer. My Sump is a 40g Long with a fuge at about 12 inches it has chaeto, mangrove 4 inch sand bed, live rock, some snails and hermit crabs, I am running GFO and Carbon Also.
I do water changes frequently 15g every 1 1/2 weeks.

I also have bunch of different snails and hermit crabs. I dont have any fish at the moment. I used to have a 4inch sand bed but I transfered tanks and now I have a 1 inch sand bed.

I have a Koralia 4, Koralia 3, Koralia 1, and I am using rio 2500 for my return pump

Koralia 4, Koralia 3, Koralia 1, the 1 may not do much for you tank, so in turn with just the 4 and 3 you still may not have enough flow.

I have the Koralia 1 in the back behind the rocks so I dont miss any dead spots.

But Lets get back to the issue stated first? Because I dont think that its lack of flow but I could be wrong

i had red slime for just under 2 years running 2 moded mjs once i added a 3rd and had one point the long way of the tank and the other 2 , one in each corner at that point my red slime went away. so ya i am speaking from personal experence. to me it was just adding the powerhead but the direction of flow i seem to achive. the 3rd one cause the tank for swirl giving more flow even where a PH wasnt pointing due to the swirl effect.

What kind of water are you using for water changes? Make sure it is RO/DI water with a TDS of 0. Anything higher than 0ppm TDS can cause algae growth. Also, are you dosing any bacteria or vodka? Red slime is not an algal bloom.

May not be contributing to the existing problem, but sure could cause another one. Ditch the Rio pump asap. They are know to leak nasty black stuff into the tank, heat up, melt, freeze up, and or short out. Basically no good.
