Hey everyone I'm new to saltwater and just need advice on equipment to use, cycling procedures and any other useful information that you guys can give to a complete newbie.
Tank Stats:
2 inches of live sand
8lbs of live rock
Roughly 8lbs "dead" rock
One power head
Whisper filter 20 gallon
Plans: I really don't plan on corals but later on I would like to have some anemones maybe when I upgrade tank size. My main reason for the 20 gallon setup is for a single peacock mantis shrimp. Yes I know the hazards and all information on this creature so I just need info on proper care, equipment, etc of a saltwater habitat

I just setup this 20 and it is about a week into just sitting there. After I learn how to manage the tank I want to convert my freshwater 55 to salt. Any tips/help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Tommy

Tip1: don't use a 55 for a salt tank. I had one for a year and that was as long as I could stand it. I had to upgrade. The aquascaping of a 55 is very difficult and the plumbing is also a huge pain. There is also the lack of surface area of the tank for oxygen exchange. Keep the 55 fresh and go with a 40 gallon breeder. If you want larger make sure you go for a large surface area instead of a tall tank.

Welcome!!!! I agree also a 40 breeder is a lot nice cause it is a lot wider. When you scape a salt tank it is much different then a fresh cause you will want to have room to place your coral. Keep a look out at your local petco they always have dollar a gallon sales and the 40 breeder is a great deal, I think they are going to be having one soon cause I noticed they were stocking up on tanks, and that usually means the sale is near...at the same time I would pick up your sump tank, you can probably walk out with both for around 100 bucks!!!! what a steal!!!
