Hey everyone. I've got a Red Sea Max S Series 500 liter tank. It's been up and running for about 7 months, and I'm looking at which fish to add next. It's a mixed reef tank with lots of live rock and a shallow sand bed.

I've currently got 2 Ocellaris Clowns, 1 Pink Spot Goby, 1 Brown Scopas Tang, 1 Flame Angel, 1 Coral Beauty Angel, 1 McCosker's Flasher Wrasse. My "wanted" list consists of Midas Blennie, Clown Tang, and Niger Blue Throat Triggers. Also considering Anthias (which ones have you had success with?) and maybe reaching for a Leopard Wrasse, though it scares me a bit for this community tank.

Thoughts? I'm really open to any suggestions.

I would probably not go with the Clown tang, they aren't the hardiest fish and are known to be aggressive. My dad had one in his 240 and it was a terror. Some of the tangs like a Kole, Tomini, any of the bristle tooth really, or a powder blue are good choices and would not out grow your tank. When you say Niger Blue throat trigger what do you mean exactly? There is a blue throat trigger, which would be ok in a reef, then there is a Niger trigger which I personally would not put in a reef although I know some have. Anthias I have always been a fan of, but I can't say anything about success because I have never had any. The Leopard Wrasse is a gamble, needs an established tank with a large pod population usually, although I did have one in my old 45 cube that was in there for about three years and ate flake food. I am sure some of the other members with larger tanks will chime in, but those are my thoughts.

Do you have pics, or a build thread? I love the Red Sea Max. I like Anthias... good community fish (I think) Good Colors too

Chase - Blue Throat Triggerfish

Was your Leopard Wrasse aggressive towards tankmates, or OK?

Sorry, I don't have a build thread, and my pics - well - suck. I'll see what I have to post. A lot were taken in the "ugly" stage!

Leopards aren't aggressive at all, if anything they can get picked on... I had to get rid of a black basket for picking on mine

No to the clown tang for sure. I love them and wish I could keep one, but they get really big and are mean even when they are small.

Anthias are really nice, but they have to be fed well. Many times a day and the proper diet.

I would re-think the Midas blenny. I have one and he is am awesome fish but he can be a bit of a jerk. But each fish has a different personality.

Thanks for all the advice so far. Here are a couple of shots of the tank.

I'm digging the scape bro

Thanks, but it needs some work right now. Had it how I wanted it initially...two "islands" with some space between. Then I had to do some disassembly to manually remove algae outside the tank, then this week experimenting with some light level changes for a couple of the SPS already glued to rocks to see if I can get a bit more polyp extension. You know how it goes...always tinkering!

I think it'll be done, well, never!!

Sounds like my same dilemma. I have a two island look but I'm gonna need to take it out and scrub for gha.

I am actually about to undergo the same thing, do you put it right back in after you scrub it? I am hesitant to put the thing back in there because this macroalgae is killing me!!

Yeah, I made up some new salt water, put it in a bucket, then took the rocks out of the tanks a couple at a time to scrub down, then put them right back in. That got rid of most of it, then just kept brushing the rocks with a toothbrush right in the tank when any regrowth appeared. Seems to finally be under control now.

Manually removing GHA wont get rid of it. It doesnt need spores like bubble algae to take place. If u have saltwater light and nutrients it will still grow back. If it was any other algae besides GHA or cyano then scrubbing.may help. And esp with bubblr algae u gotta grt rid of it. But all other algaes will die or not grow if u keep nutrients low and fish to eat it helps like tangs.

I guess getting the nutrients down is a given, and I did reduce the time my lights were on, but I will say that the scrub down did help. Maybe I was just lucky, but my thinking was that getting the algae out of the tank before it decomposed and further added to the nutrient "vicious cycle" would be helpful, and it seemed to be. Maybe we can start a new thread about this subject.

Any more thoughts on the new fish addition?

Sry yea i shoulda said scrubbing the rocks. U want to manually remove but you can do that by syphon without moving rocks is all i meant hehe
