So i started my first tank about a month or two ago and have been looking to get another fish. My plan was to get a royal gramma, but last time i was at the fish store i happened to see this really nice black neon dottyback, he was pretty nice and kinda came over to me like “hey, got food?” So now i cant make up my mind about which one I should get. I hear you cant put both together, and I probably wouldn’t anyway because my tanks a 24 gal. But tell me guys which one you’d think would be better and why. Also any tips would be helpful too. Thanks.

It depends on your plans. If you plan to keep aggressive Fish like clowns, damsels, etc then the dottyback is an OK choice. Maybe some gobies would be OK with the dottyback, but they’re aggressive. I also find dottyback to be hardier.

If anything else, by and large, the gramma would be the better choice.

Yah i already have two clowns

Agree, gramma hands down. If you want something that resembles an Orchid Dottyback, look at a Black Cap Basslet, a cousin of the gramma and lives in the same places it does.

I would personally go with the royal gramma, but they can be more shy at times... I would do more research on the specific dottyback and learn more about its typical personality before purchasing.
