Keep in mind that the skimmer won't actually control your nitrates the most effective thing against that is water changes with RO water I prefer RO/DI if you can get it

However the skimmer will remove many elements out of the water you don't want and hold the water quality up

All in all it sounds like your new tank will be fine you have a nice setup and a move on any tank is hard and really just needs to settle

I prepare new water two days in advance with a power head and a heater, not sure if there's a better way, but that's what I'm working with as far as prepared water

The skimmer will help with removing nitrates and alot of other nasty compounds. I would not use a biowheel are anything else that will trap debris and cause nitrates. All you really need is good cured live rock, good skimmer and powerheads for circulation. Rodi water only for topoff and water changes. Test and retest to make sure all your water parameters are okay before adding any livestock. I always advise to take a water sample to your lfs and have them double check your water. With the problems you said you were having with your fish sounds to me that your ammonia level was off the scale. That will kill fish in a hurry. Hope that you get everything back to normal and enjoy your tank.

Thx mike, I have put the skimmer on and to the bio off, checked all my levels and the nitrate was high and the ammonia was high, I put some ammo lock in it and did a four gallon water change, I also set my clown and star in a quarantine tank and now doing a drip line from my main tank to the quarantine tank to adjust them to it slow, they are doing really well now , I thought I was going to loose them both, the crab and the goby in the main tank are also doing well, I think , I hope, I am on the right track

If you have high ammonia i would not put that water into the quarantine tank. Did you distrub the sand bed when you setup tank? If you did thats maybe why you are having problems. I had to totaly replace mine when my nitrates would not come down. But it had been setup for over ten years. After you get everything back to normal be very carefull when feeding. Alot of people get into trouble from overfeeding which causes excess nutrients then high nitrates.

It happened when I bought some love rock off a woman, I put it in separate container for an hour before I put it in the tank but everything went haywire after that, I got the ammonia down to a safe level now and been checking it every four hours

I had a high ready and added ammo lock to it and tested it again and it read a really nice level, then bout half hour later it reads really high

I have an anemone in a quarantine tank waiting for the time to put him in a ready tank , he seems to be happy, hasn't attached himself to nothing yet but he's secreting something that looks like from his side is this normal?

And should I do water changes for the ammonia before its done with its cycle?

Not sure about the anemone but the water change is really a matter of preference if it were me I'd let it get fairly high then change it

It's been a while since we've heard from you, how is everything going now
