I have decent flow but I’m converting to a sps tank. I got one of the highest flow power heads my lfs sold that doesn’t have a controller. I can’t remember the exact flow rate

Apex doesn't benefit your coral directly like flow would unless you need it for dosing and ATO and temp control...then it would but you might already have these things.

You will get father with the ecotechs than the controller. That said you do not need ecotech to have sps. There are plenty of controllable ph that if planning a controller are cheaper. Gyres or tunze both come to mind. Also depending on tank size theres the ai nero 5.
A controller is nice if away from the tank a lot. My profilux was the last piece of my system, went lights, skimmer, ph, dosing then controller for my system. The controller tied it all together but wasnt needed to run the system

Both, what equipment you have currently and what corals you intend to have going forward. Depending upon those, light, flow and skimmer is of higher priority. Controller is a nice add on , but not a must

If you travel, apex! Agree with others though, make sure you have adequate flow. Without it you will not have much success.
I will say, I think my MP40’s are my longest surviving equipment so far. Fully worth the investment for me. I’m guessing 5 year mark.. I’ll check the manufacturer date for a reference though.

Flow, particularly variable/chaotic flow, is critical for SPS. If your current powerhead is insufficient in this regard then the choice is easy. Doesn't have to be a vortech necessarily, but something that provides variable flow is much more important than an apex-style controller.

MP40. Flow is a necessity. Apex is a luxury. In fact most don’t use it to its potential (myself included). I’m switching out my lights to orpheks which have WiFi controller in them and then my apex will only really be used to run my ATS and the WXM for my 4 MP40’s. It also controls my calcium reactor at the time, but I might change that too....
