Nicks 220g Big Boy Build

Here is where I am at in my rockscaping practice runs.. I have a bucket of smaller rocks that I can epoxy into place and I thought I would stick a few pieces to my tree structure on the right. That will get covered in zoas.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Here are my thoughts:

1) the shadow in the last picture is super creepy... I'll have nightmares tonight... Thanks for that.

2) I like the concept of the larger structure with an accent rock all by itself. Very cool idea.

3) Not sure what types of corals you plan to keep but if you are running an SPS dominant setup, I would caution about having so many steep vertical walls because of shadowing issues.

4) I think you have a great amount of negative space on the right side of the tank to balance the look. Do what you can to not crowd that side at all when placing corals.

I think it's a great look as is though, just my thoughts.

I do prefer acros over anything else so I do see what you mean about the narrow high wall. I'll have to carefully plan placement to minimize shadowing for sure.

I thought it looked narrow from the side but 24" just isn't as much room as I thought it would be. I want room for swimming and growth. Also it's 30" deep so I was trying to bring my rock height up a bit, which resulted in the narrow "wall"

Ps.. my calves look thinner in shadow form.. it's like wearing black...

Just an update, my 48" long overflow is ready for pick up this weekend! I bought a Waveline dc10000ii which I pick up May 13th (meeting up with seller at a frag show).

I need to get moving on my water station, on everything really. Just have had too much going on lately to focus on the build.

I got the laundry tub plumbed up in the "fish room" (don't tell my wife it's the fish room). I also got my stand levelled up and placed in its final resting spot. The overflow is in place and, I have my rock in the tank. I had used in water weld to keep some of the larger pieces how I wanted them so I could easily put them back how they were. The water weld did t weld so good.. and I had to try to rebuild it. I am not sure about the little island. I feel like I need one large show peice rock to stand alone by itself. I'll use some more epoxy to make the structure more stable and fit some small pieces in certain spots to make the rock work "flow" a little better.

I painted my back glass and used JB Water weld epoxy to secure my rockwork. I ordered refillable DI canisters off eBay on May 30.. that's all I am waiting for to get this tank wet! That's what I get for buying them cheap direct from China..

So this is happening...

Great rockwork!

Going to be an interesting build to follow - so, going to follow!

Thanks Bruce! I am going to put a few live pieces in soon from my cube and sand is coming as well. Just really wanted to get this cycle started.

I have it up to the overflow box for now. I have to silicone my baffles in tonight/ tomorrow then move the 80g sump down I to place. Hoping to have everything running by the end of the week.. return pump, skimmer, carbon etc.

Siporax reactor.. will be run off my return manifold. I had a hiccup with my sump tank. It fit but was too tall to be able to service anything inside. Luckily some local hobbyists had a couple sumps laying around and were willing to trade.

Have to pick up the replacement sump this weekend.

Return manifold dry fit..

From left to right: spare for future addition, phosban 550 siporax reactor, phosban 150 for carbon, pipe to refugium.

I water tested my plumbing and has everything up and running.. to discover a small drip coming from the end cap of the manifold. So I cut it off with a hacksaw and have to glue a plug into the end to repair this. Kind of a bummer but could have been worse.

The could have been worse line was premature... it is worse..

I "fixed" the manifold and put a new plug on. Sanded the hell out of it, primed both plug and hole generously, slopped on grey pvc cement.. now it leaks in other spots it wasn't leaking before.

I shut off the manifold with the handy ball valve so I can just run the return pump. This line seems to be just fine now. I turned up the power and dialed in my bean animal overflow to where it needs to be to create the siphon and trickle. Then the siphon line started leaking.. so *** this, I'm taking a nap

Knock on wood... I repaired my leaky plumbing and the tank has been running for 15 hours leak free. It looks ugly but I used primer on each joint, made a "collar" out of flexible pvc and cemented the hell out of each joint so the joint is now covered with a pvc bandaid, hopefully fused to each side of the joint. Not recommended by anyone, but I read of someone else doing this successfully so I tried it. This is just for the manifold as it would cost $150 to build a new one..

I stopped and restarted everything to make sure the sump holds the overflow and everything seems good to go..
