So I have a nice sized Niger trigger that I got from a friend and it is in my tank right now with corals. I have only seen him one time go after a head of my frogspawn but other than that he doesnt bother ANYTHING else, not even my smaller inverts. Now my question is, I know they are technically not reef safe, but since he shows no sign of bothering anything should I keep him in the tank? I would think why not until (if he ever) starts destroying thing. Opinions?

Well, the story you'll probably hear, and this applies to larger Angels too, is that it's probably a matter of time before he starts a-chompin.

So you can choose to live with that risk, which may never materialize, or find him a new home. You have to balance the importance (and value) of the corals in your tank versus the enjoyment of his presence. If the corals are worth more to you, then I would say find him a new home and replace him with something more reef-safe. Otherwise, take your chances and re-evaluate periodically.

I think it's worth a shot. That kind usually leaves things alone that were in the tank before them. If you add a shrimp or small fish though it may be seen as food. Pretty coral safe though. I had my niger for five years and besides accidentally biting my fingers when I hand fed, it was a great fish. Regretfully, I gave him to Petco when I changed to more of a reef setting. I think he would have done fine though and wish I'd have given him a chance. The pinktail I have now leaves all my hermits and snails alone and has never even looked at a coral.

it all depends on the fish really. ive heard that they can pick on zoos and shrimp, but its not every fish and the urge might get stronger as they grow. if your niger is doin fine now keep a close eye on him and make sure hes well fed and your tank is big enough. he should do fine. as said the term "reef safe" is a general term given to fish that come from a reef atmosphere in the ocean. there are many fish out there that are not reef safe, but yet they do fine in reef tanks. it really all depends on the individual fish

there was a great read in an article from fama awhile back about "non reef fish" in reef setups. The niger was one that was deemed a non reef fish and when they tested it, it turned out to be fine. Now while it depends on the fish's own unique personality I would say its worth a shot.

I am gonna leave him in there for now. I think a big part of it is that I keep him well fed and also eating pro crisps :)
