Would love to get advice/experiences with Niger trigers in your mixed reefs. Would love one but on the fence. Who has actually had one, how long and how did it go?
Do you vote Yes= get one or No= too risky

Pretty sure they destroy your cuc! And nip coral?
im following along on this one! I’d love to have one, my lfs has got one and it’s a beast!

I could steadily replace cuc but not coral so that would be my biggest no. But have seen many in reefs that is why I want to ask people that have actually had them and about their experiences.

I am not sure about niger picking on corals n CUC. It primarily depends on their mouth shape i think. nigers have inverted parrot beak(for lack of better words). triggers that have regular mouths tend to nip for sure.
You need to do more research i guess. they are aggressive for sure. need a lot of open room to swim all day long. they will knock any coral/fish that's in their way.

If I decide to add it will go in 240gal 8 ft long tank with my tang gang. I am trying to research but part of that is wanting real life experiences from other reefers and not just to text you get that is all the same for years an most sights. I will try and find better info on the mouths/beaks specifically.

I have a small niger trigger in my 210 mixed reef for a few months and so far no problems. Has not shown any interest in corals and the only interaction I’ve seen with my CUC is picking up a hermit crab and moving him out of his sleeping spot.

I'm wise enough not to add a trigger into my reef, although in very large tanks, it has worked to some degree. I just wish people would be honest about their mistake, when that trigger matures. I witnessed a friend being totallly dishonest at an lfs, after seeing with my own eyes what a clown trigger did to his reef. It was a trend around here about 10 years ago that ended with alot of extremely mad people, one lfs that pushed it lost alot of customers after many devastating results. These fish have teeth, and you can find articles about their intelligence and need for enrichment. That's why many of them become so destructive after a while.

Niger's have a tendency to wedge themselves under the rocks, fanning their tail and causing sand storms; disrupting, over turning, and yes even picking up and carrying corals across the tank. I've seen nigers with rocks almost as big as they were in their mouths. Be careful following reports of juvi's, sub adults, and new additions. Give it time, when that niger reaches 6" plus with visable teeth, you are talking about a completely different animal.
