Niger Trigger in a Reef?

I've seen them in reef tanks. They typically leave corals alone but go after crabs, snails, etc.

It really depends on the fish in most cases. If well fed in some cases helps reduce loss of inverts.

I also keep 4 angelsfish in SPS dominate reef which is typically a big no no. Its gamble, it may or may not play out in your favor.

Thx much. One of my favorite fish but hesitant to try:)

I have one in my reef as well as a picasso trigger. I got a 2" niger about a year ago and he's about 6" now. I have them in a 180 gallon tank with mostly soft corals and couple sps. The Niger never touches any corals but he is the ruler of tank. He will occasionally chase another fish but has never hurt anyone. I would see him carry a hermit crab around the tank but never saw him eat one. The picasso on the other hand.....will eat any crab or snail. I live near the beach here in SoCal and, at one point, collected about 50 hermit crabs from a tidepool. They lasted about 3 days and picasso ate them all. So, no clean up crew and I would think the Niger might do the same as well so be warned. The picsso will move any coral not glued down but will not eat them. I love triggers and they are the whole reason I started keeping saltwater tanks. After having them with coral I don't see them really eating any of them it's mostly just the cleanup crew that's the issue. I wouldn't put an urchin or starfish with them either. I had some asternia starfish in the tank at one point and they are gone.

I have one currently. It does occasionally pick up and drop frags that are not glued down if it doesn’t like where they are.
