Niger trigger question

What would be the minimum tank size you would recommend for a Niger trigger?

You'll get a lot of different answers but I wouldnt go smaller than 180....if you want multiple then double that lol

They can grow up to 1 foot - I had one in a 6x2x2 and he seemed happy enough - I would probably not go anything smaller then a 6Ft tank for an adult one. They do grow slowly so if you buy a baby you could house it in a smaller tank until you upgrade (this is always dangerous planning though)

At the moment he is 2 1/2" long in my 75g. At around what size should I think of letting him go?

Yeah that’s pretty small he will be okay in a 75g for a while. Just keep an eye on him as he gets bigger. I’d keep him there until about 5-6inches then either upgrade to a bigger tank or move him on. And make sure you give him some clams or som hard shelled food to much on to grind his teeth down

In me experience, the niger has been one of the fastest growing triggers I've ever kept. I've grown up several babies through the years and have started nigers under 2". In a year's time he will likely be outgrown of a 75g. Once he reaches 4" you should plan what to do, I wouldn't lket him get over 4.5" in that tank. This is one fish that is true to size even in captivity, he will grow to 12".

They are awesome have lots of personality. I had one in a 75 . I second keeping his teeth filled down and make sure any clean up crew goes in before him .I gave him 100.00 snack one night.

Ouch! We’ve all been there. I added a second cleaner shrimp to my display and my dusky wrasse took him down in one go. Funnily had lived with the other cleaner shrimp for a year before than and never touched him after lol...

Yep never touched anything in the tank. I added some more to help clean and he ate everything I added except the coral banded cuz he had claws. No need to say that I was not happy with him

had mine in a 90, and was an royal butt... moved him to the 220, and hes great! I mean theres also a bamboo shark in there so...

I have one in a 180 gal. So far, no issues at about 4.5 to 5 inches, but I keep a close watch because I know as he/she grows it can decide it does not want to play nice with others. A cramped house is often an invitation for aggression. Mine has been a slow grower. I've had it a little under 2 years now (purchased Jan 2017), and it was purchased at around a 2.5" size.

Maybe consider a male blue throat instead. They would do well in 125 or above.

And the males look awesome - I loved having a pair in my old 180, had so much personality and even looked after every new addition to the tank, protecting them and showing them the ropes.

That's cool! I need another midsize fish before I add my angels. Was thinking a humu humu but ..
