I snapped a few photos tonight after lights out with my UV flashlight. It always amazes me how different corals look at night.

I'd like to know more about the flashlight. What spectrum of light is it emitting? I'd also love to know what camera you used and if you used any filters?

True UV is invisible to the naked eye. And yes, it can/will light up many corals that fluoresce. But in your photos I see shadows under and behind the corals suggesting the flashlight isn't just UV light.

That said, I love corals that fluoresce. I set up a 40g tank and it's stuffed full of mostly zoas with a few lps and sps corals that all fluoresce. If they don't fluoresce (and many corals don't) I didn't put them in. I also have about 35 Rock Flower Anemones (6 to 8 big adults and roughly 30 youngsters between 3 months old and 18 months old) and they fluoresce like crazy as well. I've found the fluoresce better at blue spectrum over even violet and at true UV spectrum I get mostly (but not exclusively) yellows.

I’m using the AquaMaxx Coral Eye flashlight:

I don’t know exactly what the spectrum is, but yes it does produce visible light that looks sort of icy blue. It also has a focus ring allowing you to adjust from a very narrow beam to a very wide beam which is really handy.

I’m shooting the photos on a Nikon D610 camera with a Nikkor 200mm f/4 macro lens. I don’t use any filters, and I don’t do any post-processing. These shots are straight from the camera. I have tons of other macro photos in my build thread (link below).
