Anybody have any tips on keeping these polyps? I got some a couple months back and went from 2-4 polyps in a month but recently they are looking smaller but they are still open. It took me months and two tries to acquire these polyps. Any advice would be appreciated.

Got any pictures? Parameters fine? What is the flow and lighting like were you have them? Size of polyps can be variable in different tank conditions and may not reflect anything, but your tank. In general, more light more speckles. Lots of flow may mean they don't open to the same size. I have kept them in multiple levels within my tank. You could try an area that has plenty of light and not so much flow and see if the polyps open larger.

I have always heard although it may be a myth but dont let the colony get past like 20 polyps then frag'em I have heard ALOT that people get there colonies up to around 30 and they melt. Again it may be a myth but at least it keeps it in the back of your mind

3 tries for me different areas in the tank placement... negative results for me or melt on me the next day after shipment.

Here is mine. Dont do much with it. they grow nicely, from 2 polyps to over 10 in like 3-4 months. mid tank, 15-20in deep from 8-T5 bulbs.

I keep mine in pretty good flow and now have a good 20 polyps. They do well in my tank, but for some reason DM's don't.

i started with 3 about 2 months ago and now have about 10.they seem to spead out away from each other when they grow.other than that they are just like all the others

IME, they grow like mad for awhile - had a colony go from a few heads to over 30 - fragged it several times, even traded several frags - then the mother colony melted away and soon after the one frag I had left. Like Charles, I tried several different placements and flows. From what I've seen and learned talking to others, they actually seem to like being fragged and do best when they are fragged often.

Curious about seeming to like being fragged more often. I wonder if that is kinda like the theory of poking the outside area with a needle to promote survival mode, so to speak. I have these as well. started with 2 now have 6 in 4 months. I have mine 2 and a half ft away from a ati 4 bulb t5 fixture. One thing about them in my tank is they always seem to stay really close to the rock, and not stretch at all like the ones above. But that also is the same for others in my tank as well. Just picked up some mauls, to early to tell what they are gonna do. Good luck with yours!

I've been feeding mine small pieces of mysis shrimp. Seems like it helps them grow a little faster. I received mine in a trade with 5 polyps about a month ago and now I have 9. They seem to do best in the center of my tank with moderate flow on Reef Crest mode with my MP10. I've heard the same about them melting after fragging. I hope it doesn't happen to me because they're awesome. A lot smaller than I thought they would be though..

i started with just 1 baby polyp about 2 months ago...i have 5-6 polyps now...mine are small polyps they dont stalk out...never have a problem..they like to eat,,,a lot:D

To frag or not to frag

Here's a picture of mine. We are doing this group buy and these are the zoas I am responsible for. I have them on a frag rack with moderate flow and have mp40 on reef crest mode. They are doing great right now but you guys have me worried....

I target feed and they are growing well. I would hate to see them go downhill especially since they are not just mine but the groups. So when should I frag these?:ooh:

I heard that the best way to frag them is to let them grow onto other frag plugs than cut the connecting tissue. I haven't done it yet to mine because my frag is about the size of yours. They have a reputation of melting after fragging along with the VDM's for some reason.. Hope this helps..

Thanks reefer916 any advice helps. These are one of my favorite zoas right now!
