I find that if I wait an hour or so after all my lights have been off, my water column fills with tiny white things. (at least that's what they look like with the room's incandescent light. They just swirl in the water column, but they seem to have trajectory to them, they aren't just aimlessly swirling for the most part.
It looks to me that at night hundreds of pods release from the rocks into the water column? I don't view it as a bad thing, just curious why they would do this at all? Is it to quickly to swim to new food sources now that all the fish are asleep? (do fish sleep?)

It's almost what a kid thinks parents do after they go to bed. Quick break out the tequila and have a communal party. Then towards morning they settle back into the rocks and hide.

It's pretty neat to watch, just curious if others see this as well?

You are probably right. What more can I say?

Did you ever seed your tank with pods? If so what kind?

sounds like you have a good ecosystem in the tank.

I’ve been doing this for years and I still enjoy looking at all the life that comes out at night. It’s so interesting!

The local fish store had a one of those old style Koolaid dispensers with an airstone in it and stocked it with pods and phyto. He sold it a few dollars for a bag of pods. I had bought 2-3 bags when I started the tank. I run an Algae turf scrubber. Every time I clean the scrubber I feel bad because I have several pods crawling on my hands from cleaning the algae out. So, I know I have a healthy population that always come back with my scrubber. I see my wrasses and copperband constantly picking at pods, yet I see hundreds swimming freely at night. I must have so many pods that I can't imagine how many there probably are. But, I just did 2-3 fish bags full of pods. I didn't know if he was even successful at keeping them. I wondered if I was just adding dead pods. But, you could see a few swimming. So, I figured a few is all I need. It's just wierd seeing these things swarming the column and then darting against the current. I thought it was sand particles swirling but they dart in different directions... Not the way sand particles do. ;)
