Hello, I want to order a DSLR camera strictly for taking pictures of my reef tank.

I was curious about getting a d3100 with the stock lens (18-55mm) plus a High Definition 52mm macro Wide Angle Lens. I am confused a hair about the macro wide angle lens? Does that seem right?

I figured I would want some extension tubes so I plan to get a 12mm / 20mm / 36mm tube.

Will this combo give me the ability to take macro shots? If not can someone please point me in the right direction?

I have a d3100 with a 40 mm macro. It takes decent pics. If I had it to do over again, I would probably go with a 90-100 mm.

Not sure what the wide mean...

Here are a couple pics taken with the 40mm macro.

Thanks for your response. So in order to take some close up pictures do I want a 200mm macro lens??

I took this with my iPhone and a cheap macro lens attachment.

Can you post a link to the macro lens, I have a feeling it's a fancy name for a simple zoom lens and not a true Macro.

I'm no guru of the photo world but I just went through the same process. I got a ebay camera similar to what your getting but cannon. Than I ordered a tamron 90mm macro lense. It's a true macro lens and zoom is good enough to take quality pictures from my front glass. I found the lense used for 185 shipped. There 750 new.

There's a couple of my shots and remember I have no idea what I'm doing yet.

Heath those are the types of images I am wanting to take.

So may I ask for someone to point me in the correct direction for a macro lens that won't break the bank?

I plan to get the d3100.

Will I still want an extension tube?

I'm not positive but I think the kit your getting is gonna have a bunch of stuff you may not end using.

I'm sure nikon makes a 100mm macro or like I said the generic version like the tamron 90mm is a great choice. If you troll ebay long enough I'm sure u can find a deal.

By looking at ebay for a minute I'm seeing the Tokina 100mm 2.8f macro lense as a option. Maybe do some looking and find something used in your price range. That pro master has a macro attachment..... doesn't make me think it's a macro lense.
