Just recently purchase a Nikon D5000x 18-55 VR lens, 55-200 VR lens.

I was wondering what's the best settings for this camera to get the closest most upclose pics?:surrender:

thanks in advance
Charles-

I haven't used the d5000 but if it's anything like every other nikon then I would personally use the shutter or fstop with a macro lenses. you can probably get pretty decent pictures with the 18-55vr but you won't get that close.sad to say but look to spend a few more hundred on upgraded glass and you'll see the difference.

if you have the money, i would go with the Nikon 105mm f/2.8vr. it's between 600-800 and it's probably the best quality for the price. Probably just as good as the 1700 dollar 70-200mm but the difference is the 105mm can't zoom.

if those aren't an option, you can always take the ghetto route. check out google for some forums. There's the reverse 50mm trick, something you might want to look up.

Congrats on the nikon purchase. I'm a nikon fanatic.

Thanks, I might look into that. I'll see what uncle sam has in store for me first. LOL

Congrats I bought a Nikon 5000 a few months ago myself... Some lenses that I've heard are good are:

Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 SP XR Di II VC

Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG (Good for Macro)

Nikon Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AF-S G ED-IF VR N

Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG is a great macro lens for the price. Much more affordable than the Nikkor. I will be picking one up for my D200 when I get some more cash flow!

And to answer your question:

It isn't so much the camera settings as it is the lens itself. There are a lot of nice stickies in the photography forum that explain Aperture/DOF, Shutter Speeds, ISO, etc. Familiarize yourself with these techniques, pick up a nice Macro lens, a nice tripod and show us your photos :)

Thanks for the replies... dooly noted

that, 1700 dollar 70-200mm Nikkor super zoom lense is one bad boy.

this is a personal opinion but, the way i see it, nikkor lenses are next to nothing when you compare quality. I mean, nikon's known for their lenses. If you haven't, look up ken Rockwell, the guy is kinda crazy but logical.

This shot was taken with a 18-55 non VR with a piece of $#@$ ebay macro lenses. the frog was about the size of my pinky nail.

I'm in the same boat, kind of.
I just bought a used Nikon D40 and a Tamron 90mm macro lens and I was just wondering if there are middle of the road settings, general guide lines, etc, where you can start at.

Wow what a cool picture.

Ya me also.... I got a d3000 like a month ago and I can't get the white balance rite for the life of me and the manual says nothing about it...:( I got to daylight flouresecnts and the grid comes up but do you adjust into the red, green, blue, or yellow?? I'm shooting under 20k lights so it seems extremely hard to get correct...:(

I got the 3000 like a month ago also.. I think the best setting so far is daylight.. but its a combo of things also to make it look right ,shutter, Aperture, ISO and WB.. play around with them.. I did, now my pics are looking way better..

The built-in white-balance settings will not get the job done. You either have to shoot in RAW or set a custom white balance.

Gary

how do you set a custom white balance? I just took this shot.. I just usually play around with the setting till I'm happy.. I only had this camera (d3000) for about 3 weeks now, I still have a lot to learn.

I'm sure the owners manual has a section on white balance and how to set a custom white balance.

My manual only goes to page 60...
Sorry to the op. But I'm sure it's almost identical for both cameras... Not trying to highjack... Are you guys looking at a manual you found online??? If so could you post a link???
