Oh boy all those other boards would really be upset with my porch tank in this 9 degree weather. :xd:

Pictures

1. Left side top view looking down. the "waves" are actually an ice sheet.

2. Right side top view looking down. the "clear" area around the heater is where the heater has prevented ice.

3. Right side top view looking down closeup around the heater. The goldfish is under the heater.

4. Left front view looking back. the lines I added show the edges of the ice which was about 4/3s to 1 inch thick.

The ice was not frozen to the glass and could be easily pushed up and down.

We went to the aquarium shop and got a 300 watt heater. I pushed the ice on the left down at the back and inserted the new heater. By morning all the ice was melted and the goldfish was up and around swimming and looking for food.

I can just immagine the shock at some forums I'm blocked from. Obviously this is not good for any normal aquarium fish but glodfish are modified carps which survive frozen over ponds in northern winters.

in a few days you may have had popsicle fish if you didn't get that heater ;)

Yeppers.

For now looks like things have returned to normal with no ice and the fish up and swimming around. The new heater even cycles on and off.
Hopefully that may just mean my old heater got tired of fighting this mess.
