In the interest of getting my nitrate up to the previous 5-8ppm after upgrading tanks and not adding more fish I’ve come to nitrate dosing. At the suggestion of others here and Randy I ordered Sodium Nitrate and Potassium Nitrate from Loudwolf on Etsy. KNO3 would be fine but after 3 days of dosing .3ppm on my 65 gal tank it raised my K from 400 to 420, so I don’t like where that’s going.

Second problem, seller sent me 2x potassium nitrate rather than 1x each. No problem accidents happen. Then they asked me to reorder and put the second KNO3 in the package the NaNO3 comes in and Mark
It “refuse” so USPS returns it no charge and stated I’d be refunded for the initial order.

Second package arrives and it is Sodium Nitrite (NaNO2). Pretty annoyed but wondering if this is usable or if it requires some processing by bacteria in my tank?

Needless to say, the price/purity/convenience is not worth the trouble from this mfgr unfortunately. It was nice bc they have free shipping to boot.

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding...but If the question is if you can use sodium nitrate to raise your nitrates then the answer is yes.

Ah sorry I missed that :)

Sodium nitrite would work but I would dose slowly and you’ll have to wait for the bacteria to process it so there may be a lag if you’re testing nitrates.

Nitrites are toxic at very high levels.

Eeesh in that case I’ll just toss it and get the right stuff. Not worth it over $8. Thanks for the input!

Try green leaf aquatics 1lb bags are $3 they do have shipping costs but you get a lot more than the 4oz you are getting there. I would get a bag of mono potassium phosphate as well it’s like $3.50 for a 1lb bag and you will be covered in case you need to dose phosphates ever. GLA specializes in planted tank fertilizers so these are all aquarium safe.

I checked and they don’t have sodium nitrate unfortunately.

I asked this seller on Amazon for SDS so we’ll see what they say. Claims to be reagent grade.

The Science Company sells it, but only Lab grade 95% minimum purity.

Ideally Loudwolf would just get back to me and ship me the correct product :-/

Yeah I stay away from sodium nitrate since it adds salt to the tank, I have typically used potassium nitrate since I dose potassium and it’s a building block for plants. I got some calcium nitrate to supplement as well if I see my potassium rising (it was cheap so I figured I should have some). I have done a couple ati tests while dosing KNO3 and potassium hasn’t been high so I’m not that worried about switching.
