Having a fish only tank my nitrates have never concerned me that much. Then I read an article, for got where, that long term effect can be harmful to fish organs. My nitrates were off the charts 100+++. So I added macro algae little effect, I rinse all my frozen food in RODI water, little effect, I use only RODI water for water changes, little effect. So last Christmas Santa bought me a Aqaripure filter and with in year my nitrates are at 10. I have run the filter on the middle settings and feed it twice a week, with the cheapest Vodka I could find. So on Wednesday and Sundays I do shots with my filter (1 for the filter 2 for me). I have set up the pump in the sump were the sock are and the return water drips into the return pump chamber. The only issue I have had is the the line from the pump runs past my light for the macro so it filled with algae and I had to clean it out. The pump the send with the unit is cheap had to replace it a year and half with a better pump. As for the system I think works good, just my two cents.

Glad to hear it's working for you :) I'm not familiar with the Aqaripure, is this a sulfur-based denitrator?

Per their web site they are not a sulfur-base denitrator. This from there site"The Aquaripure Nitrate Reactor, also known as a denitrator, is a comprehensive biological filter which will completely remove all organic matter and nitrates in an Aquarium. This type of filter is also known as a denitrifier, biodenitrator, anaerobic biological filter, nitrate reactor, or simply a nitrate filter. Other biological filters only convert organic matter into nitrates which then accumulate in the aquarium, physical filters only remove larger particulate matter, and skimmers do not remove any nitrates. The Aquaripure nitrate reactor uses beneficial bacteria to break down invisible organic matter and nitrates completely into Nitrogen gas which then escapes into the atmosphere."
